Yeah this is still laughably shit. I don't know why they even bother.

Free stuff is better than no stuff. I've managed to get around 10 - 15 free virtual console games out of the stars system, in the past two or 3 years. Not incredibly amazing, but as a fan of retro gaming, i'm a happy chappy about it.

VC games? The Wii u versions? Or do you mean buying points cards to get Wii points (incompatible with Wii U)? And then playing the VC games on the Wii or the Wii mode of the Wii U?

Just Wii versions, sadly. There's the upgrade discount prices on Wii U, but then they'd no longer be free, technically. :/

The points system is incredibly sneaky. I had loads at one point. Lovely to see Nintendo reward loyalty.

It also makes me cry when I think of all of the great 'digital' downloads that I've had in the past, on Wii/DS consoles. One of the reasons I just can't bring myself to buy another Nintendo console as I'll just end up spending MORE money on stuff that will then be lost forever.

don't you get star awards if you buy digitally from eshop in Europe ?

I just got New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS via Eshop, using a code I got from ebay ... and didn't get any stars ... (same as when I got Zelda color Gameboy games from VC)

it's only physical games that are rewarded? how odd... doesn't work like that in US...

We get them for downloads yes,  the club Nintendo account and NNID are linked.

Works out very nicely when you buy a download on Wii U as you get the stars and the premium credit. That's assuming you buy the download code somewhere else eg cdkeys.com.

You can get stars from direct eShop purchases. It might take 24 hours to register, but it should count. They were doing a double stars promotion back when retail games first hit the eShop. They should still be offering stars on most retail titles.

Just had a look at the merchandise in the catalogue.

Has there ever been any decent merchandise? The current selection is both small and shitey.

When there has been decent stuff its always out of stock instantly, due to people holding on to their stars because there wasn't anything decent to spend them on.

I gave up registering cards on it yonks ago.

This is well timed, I only just went through about 30 games registering them all last week. I went for the Game and Watch Ball thing. I've still got a few to register so I'll get those done this week and get something with the rest. My survey answers got increasingly frustrated as I went on though as a lot of the silly survey questions have the same answer. There's no need for me to tell them my age every. Single. Time.

The good stuff might cost way to much points for most people, but I've had some great stuff. Shiny coins, a SNES Controller, poster, hats, collectors cards, figures and a good few soundtracks for download.

Whatever they replace it with better be more streamlined. I hope they'll be integrating it more properly into the NNID system so you have one unified login. They're already linked so they could just migrate any info across.

Damn, sounds like you got some good stuff Fawkes! I never bothered with it, was actually planning to start registering stuff rather than just throwing it away, but ah well.

Yeah, never say there is more than one game player in the house. If you do the survey wants the detail for every person. Every time,

Yep, I've got a fair bit over the years too. As a service for for free rewards for buying things I'd get anyway, it's been great, if unnecessarily clunky.

This is just the physical stuff:

As with Fawkes, I've gotten extra downloaded soundtracks, multiple batches of Wii points etc, so I'm sad to see it go. My worry now is that the rewards will go all digital, which makes sense logistically and from a cost point of view, but would be a great shame as I love a lot of the stuff I've amassed over the years.

I have the Ocarina of Time Soundtrack, but i've listened to it just once. It sounds good on paper, but don't expect to get much use out of it.

I have the Ocarina one as well, I've listened to it a couple of times, but it's just a nice little collectible really. I'm just glad to have something to spend the bloody stars on!

I should probably post about this in the 3DS thread, actually.

Looks like my umming and ahhing have cost me over the Link Between Worlds soundtrack, it's not there anymore.

I actually went back to re-playing the game over this weekend with the soundtrack half in my mind. It is pretty brilliant actually. I played it with earphones this time just so I could get the full feel and while a couple of tracks are a little iffy, many of them are beautiful. Should have gone for the CD when I had the chance. Oh well, lesson learned. I'll panic buy next time.

I'm still deciding whether or not to buy the Mario Kart t-shirt, exchange for Wii points to get either Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger, or hold onto the points in case they put out something awesome at the very last minute.
