    Although given what they did on the beta boards they might just whack all 10,000 on eBay.

    I'm sure I read that the first batch are only model B, with the cheaper model A's being manufactured later on.

    @MMMarmite I heard the other way round, with the first run being the 128MB versions :-/

    @rhythm Got a link for that? As far as I've heard the first run was model B but without a case or OS. Sure you're not thinking of the Pandora which first launched with 128MB RAM but since got boosted to 256MB then 512MB with the latest batch?

    The announcement is not that they're on sale but that the distribution networks been sorted and that preorders are open. :-D

    The RS Components site is useless for me as it expects me to register as a business here (Czech) and the UK site only accepts to UK addresses. :(

    It's nice that they have new partners but I was hoping to simply order directly from the RPi site with paypal.

    That was a farce, haven't even been able to load the Farnell site for the last 20 minutes.

    Looks a bit amateur hour, I suppose we'll just have to be patient.

    In fairness, the Raspberry Pi site has been solid, and according to Twitter they warned RS and Farnell about the traffic. It's a bit disappointing to see two British companies who claim to be leaders in electronic distribution look more like a guy in a brown coat with a pencil behind his ear, web presence-wise.

    Yes, the supposedly warned both distributors but, perhaps, weren't taken seriously.
    A Twitter user claims he contacted RS by phone and were told they won't deal with the public anyway- they only sell to business clients... could be a troll attempt but he seems quite adamant.

    On the news segement they're making a bit of a balls up in their reporting. They're saying first that it comes without software, which is true for now. Then they're saying kids will need to hook it up to s/kbd and program it themselves. Also true, but as I understood it, no one's expecting kids to code the kernel themselves. This is the dev edition - normal mortals should wait for the education edition which comes with a case and OS designed to teach you coding.

    This version is the equivalent of the old kit computers. The later version should be the equivalent of a Speccy which comes preloaded with a high level language.

    Raspberry Pi just retweeted the following:
    component suppliers only require a company name - you don't actually have to be a trading company!
    With that in mind, I hope they someday publish a list of the company names. :)

    I "think" that I've managed to grab one from the Czech farnell site. At least I've gone through the whole checkout process and got a confirmation email.

    I used my name for company name which seems to be a required field here, but hopefully it's just a quirk of their order system and I haven't inadvertently created a company and need to start worrying about extra taxes.

    It worked out to about £33.

    I really need to learn the language instead of passing everything through google translate :-)

    Exactly. I hope one of the sites starts working, though tbh I can wait until it dies down. I think the original plan of a 10,000 unit run doesn't apply now they've got Farnell and RS Components on board. So to speak.

    \o/ Second confirmation email with estimated delivery on 26th March.

    I suppose it gives me a chance to fiddle with the current debian image in a VM and find something for the kids to play with other than using espeak to say naughty words.

    I think they are going to sell an awful lot of these. Especially once they look a bit more refined and the community builds some user-friendly software. I managed to sell the concept to my 7 year old without even trying (he gets bored with me droning on about science and who things work...).
