"1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode". I wonder if you can with some scripting connect it to a TV + USB hdd and run xbmc on it :)

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

You know you can install Ubuntu onto a USB stick and boot from that, don't you?

I was genuinely too stupid to realise that. Will do that tomorrow I think. Cheers :)

I'd kick the living daylights out of the producers of Tipping Point - Ghandi

How is he doing it this cheap? Is it a mass production thing? Any development boards I've seen (after only a little bit of googling admittedly) are 50-60 and for slightly lower spec.

i can only assume he's planning to subsidise them to some extent, although he'll save money over many of the devboards out there by not needing to make it expandable, thereby reducing the complexity of the cpu design - that said, HDMI uses most of the I/O lines that something like the OMAP chip on a Beagleboard has, I think.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Cheers, mal. I hadn't thought of a subsidy.
I wonder if it'd be a better idea to use MHL-USB instead of the HDMI port. You could still use it as a HD display but it'd double as another USB port if you wanted it (and didn't need a screen). I guess it'd come down to the royalties required to get a specific port on your machine.

Still, the price is rather ambitious. It wouldn't be the first time he's made grand claims that prove to fall a little short of the target. I can see this coming to nearer 40 when all's said and done, and later this year is probably a little premature as well.

Preinstall Elite 4 on it and we'll talk.

Be classic when Elite finally comes out and costs twice as much as the PC to run it...

It just sounds fucking brilliant. I'm pleased they are developing a slightly dearer model too, which is still dirt cheap really.

Having never used Linux, I find it even more exciting \o/

I'm thinking about putting XBMC on it. Cheapest HTPC ever assuming it's got the grunt to play HD video. Unlikely, but hey ho.

How easy is it to run old PC games on Linux?

Easy. Dosbox would do it, but the problem is I don't know if there's a version that works on ARM CPUs.

This is probably the last thing in the world anyone will want to try and run games on though. If you've ever tried running a game on a bottom rung netbook, you'll have some idea of the problems involved.

It was more the curiosity of whether you could get Doom to run on it. It runs on some cameras so it probably run on this.

Yeah. But existing window software won't run on that.

The framerate dips a lot but he did say there was a driver issue and they were getting better performance before, which should be fixed. Also worth noting that it's running at 1080p with 4xAA; so it should also run a lot better with AA off and slightly lower res.

Like he said though, when the game was new people were forking out 250 for a graphics card to run it (myself included). Now you can get 15 whole pc's for the same thing, and their combined size would probably be less than 2 graphics cards... crazy times.

Can't wait to see what kind of pc you could fit into a watch in 10 years.

First 2 (of 10) auctions of the beta boards are taking place on ebay now. One is over 1400 at the moment so presumably they should be considered donations rather than bids. Should be released by february.
There's a pretty smooth full HD trailer bring shown running on it on their site although it is thought that the XBMC skin might be a push (unless someone tweaks it). Definitely getting one of these. Might donate a few to a school or something too in recognition of a superb idea.
