Was MMIV even released in the EU? I remember having 1-3 on the NES, but I've only got a copy of MMV GB because my local indie games shop ordered it from the US for me as I was a regular customer.

Registered 4 years ago@redcrayon Ha, yeah. The game does have it's 'cheap' moments. There are ways to get one over on the game though, so it's satisfaction where you'd otherwise feel dirty lol.3DS: 4210 4002 8289 (Dave)

Ah, cheers
@Raiko
Yeah, I still find it good fun- can't believe I hadn't played it before this weekend, must have played at least a dozen other Castlevania games across half a dozen systems!

Registered 4 years agoI prefer the old style Catlevania. Don't get me wrong. I love the Metroid style gameplay they introduced, but these ones test your skill and patience, whilst offering some great music and graphics.
Edit - I've never touched 2 or 3, or Super Castlevania for that matter. I will do though if they go up for sale on the eShop though.

Registered 4 years agoAh, now Super Castlevania IV, there is a game! Classic 2D game, great controls, graphics and sound, no RPG stuff or backtracking, just you, a whip (that you can finally hit above you with!) and those glorious mode 7 shenanigans. Awesome, awesome game.
/wipes away nostalgic tear.
I like metroidvania too, but the simplicity of the 'advance, kill the boss' method is really nice, It's like playing a shmup after Borderlands- you don't need to worry about where to go next or who to talk to, just kill everything in sight and keep going right. Some days, slumping on the sofa after work and with an hour to myself, that's all I want.
So many of the best games on the SNES came out early in its lifespan, it's weird.

Registered 4 years agoCastlevania and Monster Hunter demos are up.
Interesting to see the Zelda Oracles games heading for the VC soon in Japan, I have fond memories of playing the two back-to-back to get the real ending.

Registered 4 years agoMonster Hunter takes time to get used to- the controls always feel very slow to anyone used to action games that hasn't played MH before, I know they did to me when I first played Tri.
Also, the demo drops you in at the deep end with a full hunt- in the main game you have time to do a few basic quests and learn how to fight first.
I found the screen a bit limited after being used to the Wii version, but when you enter an area with the monster, hit the 'lock on' button- that will always keep the camera pointed at the monster in front of you. I soon slipped back into old habits with that and was hunting with ease soon enough.
Needing to sheathe weapons to drink potions etc is also entirely intentional for the team-based play- other hunters distract the beast while you run off and heal- and also every monster attack has a 'tell' and is able to be blocked or dodged in some way- it's possible to beat everything wearing just your pants with a bit of practice!
/team EG swimsuit runs were epic

Registered 4 years agoI found I couldn't lock on to enemies in either demo. If I tap L once, it realigns the camera behind my character. If I press it twice, it does the same thing. What am I doing wrong? I've looked at the settings in the options, which explain the two camera methods, but I find no difference when trying each method out.3DS: 4210 4002 8289 (Dave)

Registered 4 years agoCheers mate! Will have another stab at the demo again in the morning.
Edit - One more thing. Can I take out my weapon without having to attack immediately? I've tried using the Lance and that large sword and i'd like to be able to block without having to expose myself momentarily.

Registered 6 years agoI loved monster hunter on the wii so I got on ok with the demo apart from the slightly odd controls...I didn't know you could lock on so that will help me a lot when I try it again later. My flatmate is planning to get it and he's a monster hunter virgin so will be fun as I've not done much co-op in monster hunter -

Registered 10 years agoTried Monter Hunter demo and I really cannot stand that camera. How am I supposed to hit or dodge the monster if I have to realign the camera manually all the time?! Tried with two different weapons (lance and bow) and got my ass handed to me both times.
And there was a 20min time to complete the hunt, is that a standard mechanism or just there for the demo? Cannot quite stand timed missions in games... -

Registered 8 years agoIn the full game most quests give you 50 minutes, which is a lot more than you'll ever need.
If you don't like moving the camera manually then use the new target cam feature. -

Registered 10 years agoThanks, 50 mins doesn't sound too bad. Perhaps it would be easier to get circle pad pro for this...
Managed to slaughter the easier enemy, though! -

Registered 4 years ago@Lukree It took a few goes, but I got used to the target cam once Cid had told me about the lock-on button. Makes life so much easier. Don't think the circle pad will be completely necessary.3DS: 4210 4002 8289 (Dave)

I'll definitely be picking up a Circle Pad Pro, as I like to control the camera manually, and the touch screen d-pad just isn't cutting it for me.
Target cam is a really nice addition, though. I'll still use that for the bow. -
