Can't you have racist characters in computer games?

    You... want racist characters?
  • Deleted user 3 February 2013 17:43:25
No but books and movies have racist characters. Everything in gaming gets such a dramatic reaction. She didn't come across racist to me, it is fine that she tortures people though?

@Kid_Icarus - There's nothing racist about Tina. Standard internet dudes kicking up a fuss, because that's what they do.

Keep Tina exactly as she is.

@Pepsipop - She's just a little insane. As are most of Pandora's residents.

Nobody seemed bothered by a bunch of other dodgy stuff that happens in Borderlands. And they shouldn't be, its clearly deliberately OTT and played for laughs.

PS: I knew you didn't want racism. It was just your wording. And I'm a dick.

I got a crazy good gun for doing so.
You could save them? Oops. I just dropped my turret and wasted them all like usual.

Exactly, I don't understand how she could be considered racist let alone why the writer would consider changing her. Especially when a) there's more offensive stuff in the game and b) it's months after the game was released.
  • Deleted user 3 February 2013 18:19:52
@Vortex808 yeah, if you kill bubbles you can then kill or save little sister. If you save her you get a beast pistol.

I didn't find Tina racist, although I understand why others might think that. Also, it's not really up to me, as I'm not of the race that was being made fun of or whatever.

I did find her extremely annoying though.

@Pepsipop these are good questions to be asking! Fact is, if gaming wants to considered one of the "grown-up" entertainment mediums, it needs to be having the conversations about race, torture, violence, etc. that other mediums have had to deal with, and are still dealing with.

It's fine to have different opinions on these things. The only one I don't understand is that which says "come on, who cares? It's just a game!"
  • Deleted user 4 February 2013 07:10:01
You....thought.....she was annoying? Oh I thought she was fantastic. :)

Yes I don't see why racism and other such things can't be in a mature game.

Obviously racism sucks but it shouldn't be considered untouchable.

Bioshock infinite apparently has a lot of racist themes going through it.

Err, I don't want *racism* in games, but that's not the same as exploring issues of race and racial identity. And I think gamers should take the whole thing a bit more seriously, if they want gaming to be taken seriously.

But racism is bad. It shouldn't be promoted by any art form.

    /obvious

Edit: and yeah, I found Tiny annoying. I seem to be in the minority on that, but whatever. Her character seemed to be trying really, *really* hard to be one of those kooky, OMG SO RANDOM people that I meet from time to time. But while I can find that funny in small doses, in this case it felt forced, and got quickly annoying.

And she did what sounded like a stereotypical impression of a black person at times. Problematic, maybe.

Exactly. You're not obliged to be offended, but a little empathy is never a bad thing.

Having racism in entertainment doesn't mean it is promoting it. You can have racist characters but can be shown as a bad character trait.

Certain subject like this and sex should be explored to create interesting serious games.
Violence is sure done to death and seems to be generally accepted no matter how sick it is.

I would have less issue with my kids seeing intimate scenes done correctly than all the shocking violence I see in the games I play.

Holy sweet jesus people are irritating.

'Hey! that thing that is happening is happening in such a way that I can vaguely associate it with my own preconceptions about black people! OMG that thing is so racist!'

They're not my preconceptions. They're stereotypes.

That's sort of the whole point.

There is no stereotype in Tiny Tina.

Sweet christmas if people were less concerned with shit like this and more concerned with say...feeding the hungry, we'd all be swimming in fucking steak.

Noob question (360) - have season pass, where to download dlc?

I can't start download in game then switch off like normal can I?

If you start the dowmload in game you have to wait, which is a pain. You can quit out once it's started, go to your download history on the dash and start it from there, it'll then download in the background as normal.

It seems a quick way to level up is 4 player co op, everyone level 13 ish one player turns up level 50. Then pick missions of higher level. I went from 11 to 14 in around 90 mins.
  • Deleted user 4 February 2013 19:28:01
I enjoyed Borderlands 2 until my co-op partner fell out with me.

Thought I'd blast though the last of the side missions tonight before the final showdown, unfortunately that meant doing the timed missions which I'd left until last. What a pain in the arse they are to do!

They're actually really easy. Before you start the mission, drive your vehicle to the first checkpoint, get out, then run back and start the mission. Go to the vehicle select and teleport to your vehicle. Easy!
