Gentlemen. Your mission, should you choose to be bothered:

I'm looking for a new cpu cooler, preferably an aircooler, but it can not be the Noctua nh-d14, on account of it being simply too large. I'm planning to overclock an i7 860 to 3.5 GHz.

Anyone got any good suggestions, or have one they're very pleased with?

    Iam using this one;

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Arctic-Cooling-Freezer-Rev-2-Cooler/dp/B002G392ZI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302848858&sr=8-1

Using it with a 965, seams pretty cool and is OC a little bit overall a good buy but it is rather large as its mostly made up of a large heatsink. No idea about its OC with a i7 thourgh..

If its out of your budget there are cheaper models, the H50 and the newer H60.

^ I was eyeing up an H50 and Kuhler 620, are you getting good temperatures, and is it extremely loud?

I've been using an Arctic Cooling Freezer (4, I think) in my PC for the last three years or so, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's attached to a relatively old Intel Q6600 which has been overclocked to 3.0GHz (great processor, by the way) and I've never seen the CPU temperature rise above 35 degrees, even under stress. When I first got it, the cooling was so efficient that I couldn't get it over 20 degrees with SuperPI running (Super PI, an awesome benchmarking tool). It's in need of a wee dust now, I think.

I tried one of those with a i7 and it was hardly any better than the stock hsf. Um, I'm using the Noctua NH-D14 at the mo but that's no good for Super. :|

You could try the Zalman CNPS9900-NT. I had one of those on a PII 955 for a while and was pleased with the performance.

    Bump

    http://img577.imageshack.us/f/img0322xk.jpg/

Bought some ram heatspreaders because they were cheap, 2GB of extra ram (now have 8GB in prep for BF3), and an Antec Kuhler 620 cooler. When you hook it up, and turn it on for the first time, you hear lots of gurgling sounds, but those die out and then it's quiet. Mounted 1 fan on the front of the radiator pulling out heat, and another one on the back pushing it out. Results:

Half an hour of idling, stock cooler: http://img717.imageshack.us/i/idlenooc.jpg/

Half an hour of idling, Kuhler: http://img684.imageshack.us/i/idlenooc620.jpg/

Half an hour of Bad Company 2, stock cooler: http://img826.imageshack.us/i/loadnooc.jpg/

Half an hour of Bad Company 2, Kuhler: http://img849.imageshack.us/i/loadnooc620.jpg/

Aw yeah, now I can overclock! There's now 1 fan extra in the system, but I don't notice an increase in sound.

So yeah, I recommend the Antec Kuhler 620.

The inside of your pc is shockingly clean.

That is actually quite a snazzy solution. Water cooling is such a faff normally...

I had to take out the mobo to mount the backplate, I used a high-tech solution to clean everything (my mouth, blowing the dust of). On the other side of the computer is a cable nightmare, I ordered a sleeving kit from Performance PCs. Will post more pictures later, as seeing other people's pc's is basically pornography for nerds.

I know this post is pretty old, but I just wanted to suggest to the Op if it's still here that he should try water cooling, which is way more efficient then any other way of cooling!

The Kuhler replaces your case fan doesn't it? Why you have an extra fan?

Fan's on the radiator for the water cooler Crispy. They're all setup like that.

Yeah, so the rad goes where the case fan is and the case fan attaches to the rad, right?

The case fan stays where it is and the rad is attached to it.

My dad made his own CPU cooler for our overheating BBC Model B back in the day.

It consisted of gluing a 50p to the top of the CPU.

    Worked a charm, incredibly.

It might perform well, but I can't see myself buying something with such a name.

Then again, I am running a Prolimatech Megahalems...

No, that doesn't sound better than Foxconn H67S.

Prolimatech Megahalems seems to cool my PC quite well.

Edit: and is also a stupid name.

Is there any purpose to that? I haven't found a single reason to overclock my i5 at all yet.

I overclock my i7 950, although it only makes a difference in a few games.

It's so easy there's no reason not to, plus the cooler keeps it safe anyway.

Reason was it came as an overclocked bundle from Scan.co.UK...
