ok, so i probably shouldn't be so assertive. after all, there is a "kerry is winning" thread not far from this one. and everyone has their own predictions and half of them tend to be wrong.

but 86% of florida has been counted and bush has a 5 point lead. i dont think kerry can turn that around.

bush has a 4 point lead in ohio (but only 36% have voted).

anyway, this is fun as hell to watch. it's actually my first election to vote in (being that i'm 20 years old), and can't recall being nearly as involved last time.

It's not looking good, is it? :/

Florida seems like a definite Bush victory, Ohio is a likely Bush victory, and even some allegedly safe states like Michigan continue to report Bush majorities - dashing my earlier hopes that some of the Bush leads were within statistical error margins.

The mad thing is, Kerry is doing much worse almost across the board than the polls suggested he would - and as a rule of thumb, the polls usually break in favour of the incumbent, with the challenger performing better on the day.

At this rate Bush will win the popular vote as well as the Electoral College, have a better margin than he did four years ago, and return to power with a much clearer mandate. Fucking terrifying.

I think if Kerry wasn't so ugly, he would have killed Bush.

But remember, it still isn't over.

bush is up 53-46 with 42% of votes counted in ohio... i dont think he will pull that back, and that is his only hope. shame.

Hmm. Suddenly strikes me that each precinct doesn't represent the same number of voters, so actually those figures can be a bit misleading - right now Bush leads 52-48 in Ohio with 51 pe cent of precincts counted, but I have no idea what percentage of actual VOTERS that represents.

Presumably the large urban precincts take longer to return results than the small rural ones, so actually there's a fair whack of the electorate unaccounted for? Or am I missing something here?

It's hard to tell which comes quickest: rural or urban. There seem to be factors that would suggest both could be quicker.

But Bush apppears to have won florida, so I'm not sure if Ohio will matter.

:/ dunno... but the difference in florida is a huge number...

ohio not over yet but still pretty dire:

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/OH/P/00/index.html

even worse as there looks to be at least 3 more that could easily swing to bush.

    rubbishhhhhhhhh

4 more years of comedy gold! But how will he top the rumours on the internets?

Besides, it's not like Kerry would have been much better. The world was screwed either way - at least this way we can laugh at the sheer ludicrousy of it all!

It does look like ending up 279 to 259, with Ohio making up that 20 difference. The only glimmer of hope for the Kerry camp is that the exit polls in Ohio put them well in front, so perhaps the remaining 25% of unreported precincts will reflect that. Seems unlikely though. I think it's probably over.

Yeah, it definitely looks like another 4 years of Bush.

But you know what? Screw him. And screw everybody who supports him. He can't stop me from having fun. He can't stop me from being who I am. He can't stop me from drinking myself senseless and dancing around like a fool.

We are the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world. Or something like that.

And if against all odds Kerry has been elected president when I wake up later today, well... I'll be a very happy little boy. And I'll be drinking some more. And singing. And dancing.

    Yeah.

Democratic conspiracy theory - 4 more years of Bush after Kerry is put in as a sacrificial lamb, then Hilary Clinton will have a clear run for the presidency in 2008.

I'm not thinking of four more years of Bush. Not yet.

Yeah, pretty sure Bush has won.

A family friend of ours ran for a Dem House Seat in Illinois. He got his ass kicked by about 30 points.

You know what would be a REALLY interesting presidential race? Guiliani vs. Clinton
