Ok so I'm not into gaming much thesedays apart from the occasional steam budget title but just seen this on the eurogamer:

    Tribes Ascend announcement trailer

Although the trailer doesn't reveal much I hope this game lives up to my expectations. Tribes 1 and 2 were very influential games for me in my early teens.

If you havn't heard of Tribes 1 or 2 before, it was a team based multiplayer FPS game with up to 128 players, made by Dynamix and published by Sierra. Its been at least 10 years since T2 but to date I can't name a single FPS multiplayer game that was as fun to play.

If you like the idea of futuristic character classes, balanced weapons, vehicles and jetpacks on huge battlefields then this might be your cup of tea.

A quick browse on the tube, I found this nice clip demonstrating some Tribes 2 gameplay.

Tribes 2 was and still is one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had, alongside the likes of battlefield 1942. It still confuses me how we managed to take steps away from that sort of game play and ended up with small map heavily close combat affairs.

I was 15 when Tribes 2 came out, I had just gotten my first PC and convinced my mum to get 'internet'. We I got hooked up with the fastest connection possible a whopping 56k, I joined a server in Germany and managed to get a 250ms ping! This became my home of online gaming for the next year and a half.

I mastered skiing, tracking the trajectory of flag runners and annihilating them in a cloud of blue plasma emitted from my disc launcher. Piloting the two? types of aircraft scout, transport/bomber. Infiltrating and sabotaging my enemies base, becoming an engineer and building both offensive and defensive emplacements to help tip the tide of the battle in my teams favour.

I was 15 years old and already playing a game which few games would ever come close to matching. No wonder I'm disappointed with Multiplayer games now, I was spoiled the moment I got online.

Hi Res are not the studio for the job though =[

You said it so well, good times and also bad when I remember the shocking phone bills.

Never heard of Hi Rez until now, or played their Global Agenda MMO but you can see where they got inspiration from.

Also found this page where you can sign up for alpha testing

I just got into the beta. It seems to be near-impossible to kill someone on the move.
  • Deleted user 3 December 2011 09:45:43
Totally missed this. Is there any chance of still getting in?

Yeah, they are slowly launching more and more beta invites by the look of it.

I've put a few hours in the beta so far, the biggest changes from Tribes 1/2:

    1. No longer need any skill to ski fast, you just hold down the space bar, so its been dumbed down for the new generation of gamers.

    2. Like most modern FPS shooters it has an XP system, where classes/weapons/packs will be unlocked as you work your XP up. This is odd because you can't fully customise the weapons and class you want, you just pick from a list of predefined characters.

    3. You earn points in each match by flag capping, killing people, defending, repairing etc These points can be used to upgrade your base defences (turrets, generator) or buy vehicles.

    4. It will be a free to play title on release, their hoping to generate cash from buying XP buffs and other stuff.

For a planned free to play title it is excellent and fun but ultimately not as good as Tribes 2 which is disappointing, I'll keep playing though as I'm hoping to see more improvements.

They just removed the automatic hitscan weapons. Shotguns, the sniper rifle, and the pistols are the only remaining hitscan weapons. They are trying to tweak Tribes to be both accessible and still appeal to its hardcore audience, and it seems like they are going to do fairly well.

    >_> So don't come into the assault rifles in this game and expect them to work like in most games. You'll miss. You have to lead your target.

Really getting into this. Currently alternating between a pathfinder kitted out like the jumper was before it was removed, and a brute to annoy people in bases.

Still wish there werent any ARs and Snipers though. They're just annoying.

Sniper rifles just are kind of annoying. Sentinels are either balls awful or dropping orbital bombardments constantly.

Have you tried Jug in bases? Bouncing the mortar around corners is incredibly effective. I find it more effective than the brute for me.

The Jug is the one with the Spinfusor MKD, right? I find the brute a little more flexible, I feel a bit limited in what I can do as a Juggernaut. The grenades are awesome as well.

The updates are making this game better and better, although having to unlock the Spinfusor for soldiers seemed an odd change.

Just tried the beta this afternoon and pretty impressed.

I didnt play much Tribes 2 but did play plenty of Vengeance and this feels 'right'. Thought they might water it down for all the slow plodding military shooters out now but its still nice and fast paced. Althourgh a bit easier to jump into as i was able to get up a fair amount of speed despite not playing any tribes game in years.

Saying that pelting along on using skis never gets old. Only wrong thing is its a bit odd to have a xp system but i guess mandatory these days.

Known as 'Sharzam' in 98.5% of games

I thought spinfusor unlock was retarded. The Thumper is an excellent gun in its niche role, so it seems like a shoe in for an unlock. But nope, people get introduced to tribes with an assault rifle that's outperformed by most of the SMGs.

Yeah, fractals are pretty boss, but I've learned I can cover my retreats with that huge instant-death radius grenade the jug has. I'm going to try learning it so I suck less at this game, because I suck pretty hard at it.

On the other hand with the AR/Disc or Pistol/Thumper thing, the AR is apparently more common than the spinfusor in competitive matches because it's so much better for chasing flag runners. I don't think it should be unlocked from the start though, giving players automatic weapons sends out the wrong messages to beginners IMO.

I've worked out a nice flag grab route on Arx Novena that lets me grab the flag at 275 kmh, but every time I go for it some knob grabs the flag at less than half that before I get there >:( Might go back to chasing for now.

Got a triple sticky kill. Poor suckers, shouldn't corner a raider in a small room.

At least I'm finally learning a weapon other than the fusion mortar.

I've been trying infiltrator a little today. The pistol is surprisingly powerful, the stealth spinfusor is handy in a pinch too, even if it's not especially powerful.

Yeah, that pistol is one of the highest DPS weapons in the game. Connect a few times and you can ace fellow lights and mediums. Heavies are a different story entirely, like always.

Also, I have a beta key to hand out as well:

It's got a bit of a learning curve, to say the least. Stick with it though, it's so satisfying to play once you've got the hang of it.
