Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.
The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.
It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

Footage of water rushing into a City on CNN right now.

It went on for a loooong where I am. Now, my quaint little seaside town is getting a 10m tsunami warning. If you're in Japan, stay safe kids.

Saw footage on the BBC, of an office. The whole thing was shaking and there were still people trying to work...bizarre.

500mph as in water moving faster than a commercial airliner? That has to be shenanigans, it would be chaos!

The footage on the BBC was pretty horrific. I hope the warning systems have been effective and people have managed to get to safety.

    Awful.

What the fuck is going on, I've never known there to be so many earthquakes, there have been a dozen whoppers in the last couple of years.

    Good luck everyone out there.

CNN coverage is truly shocking. anchor is giggling their way through it, and at one point even said they were "flooded with tweets".

On the positive, there don't seem to be any confirmed casualties yet, only injuries. Let's hope it stays that way.

It's just happened. If you have seen the pictures on the BBC then it's going to be a tragic event.

Well there's a constant engaged tone. Not surprising really, but it's still very worrying.

It should at least be a small consolation that the Japanese are fairly used to these events, and are generally quite well prepared.

Looking at the video feeds I highly doubt it will be that low.

Seeing buildings being carried across farmland is both horrific and surreal at the same time, fucking hell.

    This space left intentionally blank.

For quakes, yes, tsunami no. An unknown amount of people have been lost, which is why they aren't talking numbers yet. We're talking whole towns.

Watching BBC news at the mo, eyepopping stuff.

Japanese media is estimating 10,000+ dead. Although of course the media always does have a habit of going overboard.
