Best ones off the top of my head:

    Final Fantasy VII
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Dirge of Cerberus
    We Love Katamari
    Ecco the Dolphin
    Link's Awakening

And the woefully underrated Muppet Race Mania.

After playing the shit out of Theatrhythm and already having purchased Distant Worlds I and II, I'm looking to get a complete collection of Final Fantasy music.

However, I don't want to end up with a load of CDs of 8-bit chiptune music.

So my question is: If I buy the soundtracks for the older Final Fantasy games (1-6, and to an extent 6-9), will the performances be "real" (i.e, performed) or just literally lifted from the games themselves and therefore synthed or chiptune?

Oh, and FInal Fantasy IX's "You're not alone!" is probably my favourite piece of music ever, video game or otherwise.

An arrangement is different from an orchestral/ real-life performance as an arrangement is simply defined as an interpretation of the original score. So an arrangement could still be chiptune :-(

Listening to the sample on that link suggests the soundtrack is still chiptune/ synthesised, sadly :-(

Cheers for attempting to answer my question though!

    Some blinders in here
Is that a personal list there Dirt? I was really in the mood for some decent game music and it looks like the EG forum search has come up trumps this evening! So many awesome tracks on there, loving the Deus Ex 1/HR stuff as well as Chrono Trigger Orchestra version amongst many others.

Also, despite your original post being almost 2 years old now it seems that list has had music added right up until recently with some Dragon's Dogma, Fez, Ni No Kuni and Hotline Miami tracks.

Added the page to my chrome speed dial, lovely ;)

Icarus Maius from Deus Ex: HR
The main theme from all Final Fantasy games (my favourite version is in FFVI)
About half of the FFVII soundtrack
About half of the Vagrant Story soundtrack
The menu music from Metroid Prime
Lots of various tracks from Halo, Halo 2 and Reach
The main themes from Trine and Trine 2 (different tracks, but both beautiful)
The intro movie music from Soul Blade
    Most of the Alundra soundtrack
Most of the Mass Effect soundtrack
Most of the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack
The God of War main theme
    The Zelda main theme

Um, probably loads more. I love videogame scores, and I think they're enormously underrated. I would really recommend everyone buy the Greatest Video Game Music 2 by the London Philharmonic. Some awesome tunes on there.

Game Soundtracks I'm currently listening to:

    The Witcher 2
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
    Chrono Cross
    Dark Souls
    Torchlight 2
    Black Mesa

I have around 250-300 gaming soundtracks (many came as freebies from buying indie games via Humble Bumble and stuff). They actually make up the bulk of my music collection.

I have to agree with the Max Payne 3 OST. I didn't like it to start with (I think because it was so totally different to the OSTs from the previous games), but it's really grown on me. I do a regular showcase of gaming music on a radio show I do, and I find some of the MP3 tracks actually work very well juxtaposed with Mass Effect or Deus Ex stuff.

Some tracks from two games whose music is not particularly easy to find:

Rocket: Robot on Wheels (ogg format)
    Arabian Flights
    Clowney Island (land)
    Food Fright
    Paint Misbehavin' (land))

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (mp3 format)

Abydos (thought this music actually plays during Tutankhamen's stage in Luxor.)
    Bat Mummy
    Boss 1
    Fire Mummy

(The Sphinx tracks used to be on the Eurocom website, but alas, the company closed.)

    Currently it's:

Deus Ex HR - though have to watch the volume when i'm listening to the brothel theme on the train into work.

Batman Arkham City - Nice variation from the haunting sadness of the Pay Your Respects theme to the fast paced thrill of You Should Have Listened.

Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Some great remixes of the classic SOR tracks from the fanmade HD remake that was shut by Sega a while back.

For those that like the Castlevania series:

A Cursed Legacy: An Orchestral Tribute to the Music of Castlevania is excellent, and completely free!

Not sure about rocking out to it but the best music ive heard from a game recently is Halo 4...especially the music from the last level.
