    Playstation Blog

A rather frustrating PSN downtime this evening will bring a rather excellent update for PS+ subscribers.
The ability to save around 1000 game saves. Along with Developer Locked game saves.

    Excellent news.

I'm going to go for Plus once NGP comes out, the value will really grow then.

Very cool idea and the sort of thing they should be including if they're ever going to sell + to me.

At the moment though, I'll stick with, well, a USB stick, there are very few saves I've got that are locked.

The implementation sounds a bit fussy atm, though...I wonder if I ever remember to do this. They should really just automagically back up everything there...

Absolutely brilliant firmware update - exactly what I've asked for since getting a second PS3. Very happy with this one, although having to do it manually is a bit clunky - but I don't expect much more from Sony tbh. Just happy they're doing the right things... getting them done the right way as well might come one day.

This is a more than welcome addition, especially to those of us burnt by YLOD in the past. 5 minutes every month to back up my saves ain't exactly the end of the world, but would still appreciate a one click 'copy all' option.

Backing up all saves to USB storage should be a standard feature across the board.

Awesome. Not that I would ever use it but it bodes well for NGP / PS3 compatibility.

Coulda' done with this when I had two PS3s :(

    /sells 360.

    Crikey. That was painless.
Agreed an auto backup option would be cool. But I've backed up all my important saves and with the exception of The Joe Danger save they were almost instant uploads (not sure why the JD save is so large :/)
I know they are only a few kb's Generally but still...

    Great stuff.

    Steam do.

    PSPlus is worth it anyway.

psplus is pointless imo just wasting money. if no one brought psplus then features like this would be free. sorry but a pay to rent service and Sony wants 40 umm no thanks.

theres something called a psn card which you actually keep the stuff you download unlike psplus were once your sub expires you cant use anything you downloaded.

    total rip off.

Steam offers a better service than both console manufacturers. They don't make any money off hardware and software sales either.*

Anyway, how does this work? Is it essentially a tiny USB drive I can slowly upload locked saves to one by one, or can I bulk upload all of my saves and have them auto sync?

How about the much more likely option that we simply wouldn't have this feature at all? Hey look, now it's like you're not missing out on anything at all! And you mean bought, not brought.

    *Unless sold through Steam.

Yes, it's a pay to rent service. I fail to see what is wrong with that?

3 a month is hardly a rip off.

Way I look at it is Sony chose not to charge for online gaming and offered a service which is optional.

Guarantee more people would of complained if they charged for online gaming

Well you don't keep the stuff and Sony choose which games you play which could mean you already played that game.

    Enjoy those Disney PS1 games.

If you go to the Saved Data Utility and are a PS+ subscriber you will have a new Folder into which you can copy your files.
As with the USB backup option you DO have to do one by one, but it takes a matter of seconds for each and once you get into a rhythm (triangle -> copy -> X etc...) it dosent take long to do. 15 minutes for me to back up all my saves.

Sorry mate but I don't agree at all. If you think 40 quid is a rip off to rent games for a year (or 15 months currently) as well as all the other features such as the one detailed in this thread then our opinions vary massively.

Your comparison to buying games on psn is an odd one. 40 quid would get you about 3 - 4 games. I get that every month. it's also optional, which again is very nice.

If you don't like it fine, don't get it, but it's hardly a rip off
  • Deleted user 10 March 2011 14:16:35
Yes but you don't really own the games this is what I'm saying.

You clearly haven't done any research and your comments are pretty way off the mark.
We have not had one Disney game :)

We got Stacking this month, and plenty more to boot in previous months. The 36 (PSN card purchased cheap for the initial sub) has been more than made up for in content.
I will almost certainly be renewing and even if I didn't most of the games I've received wouldn't be played again any way. And I have (what did they say) 6 months to pull down any saves I uploaded to the cloud before they get trashed...

PS+ is Great value for money. And with the constant adding of features and regular access to betas/demos before anyone else, it's all good.

Oh, almost forgot the obligatory "IMO"... :)

Yes. That is what renting means.

    Sheesh, it's not exactly complicated.
