Just finished the 3rd series. Fuck me. It's utterly brilliant. The Red Wedding - OMG. I didn't expect it to be so brutal. Whoever is responsible for putting those books on such a productive diet deserves an award. I do like the way they've developed the characters their own way, and added some stuff of their own, rather than play safe.

It's a better piece of entertainment.

What was that Stark girl doing in the matrix?

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Well, I'm now all caught up, 30 episodes of Game of Thrones over 7 days of viewing. Technically, 8 days but I didn't watch any of them on Christmas Day.

So, who's read the books as well as watched the show?

How far does the series, so far, get through the book(s)?

I'm getting the urge to read them, now, but don't want to spoil myself too much.

Series is just under 2 thirds of the way through book 3. 1 season is book 1, second season is book 2 with a touch of 3, season 3 is just over half of book 3.

Cool, that's good to know, I was fearing that everything so far would be only part way through the first book!

I picked up the 6 book boxset a while ago, I was trying to figure out whether to look at the back of them to see what the summaries would say, but was worried there would be horrendous spoilers whilst trying to figure out how far they matched up.

You'll be fine reading up until the end of book 3 (once the new TV season finishes) but after that I think it is going to get horribly confused. The books after that have a weird sort of timeline, and the TV series may do it quite differently.

The producers have basically admitted that there will come a time when they use the books only as a backbone to their series and develop the character and narrative arcs in a way that is more suitable for the screen, which is kind of what they have already done to some aspects of the story.

Yeah, it's probably a good idea. The later books are complicated enough already - trying to adapt them 100% faithfully within the constraints of the TV format is a recipe for failure.

Besides, If Martin continues at this pace, the TV show might get ahead of the story.

I think most expect the show to over take him now. Not sure if the next is still due for 2014 as its gone a little quiet.

Wish HBO didn't wait so long to release them on Blu-ray.

Blu ray is usually first week of March in the year after it was on TV.

Does series 4 start airing on TV in April?

    @YenRug

6 book set? He has only written 5. (Books 3 and 5 are split in half on paperback though but even then 6 is a little odd as it suggests you only have the first half of book 5).

@YenRug I know its coming just wish they would get it out for Christmas rather than wait a year.

They also need to include resume playback.

Have to agree, completely, it's idiotic to miss out on Xmas selling numbers.

I hadn't watched the show up until now, though I bought the S1 boxset some time ago (had the replica dragon egg in with it). I started watching it on the 22nd, by Xmas Eve I was looking to see how much it would cost to buy S2; I could see S2 going for about 33 and then I saw S3 was going for about 35 (though hadn't realised it wasn't out until February at this point), but then I saw that there was a complete S1-S3 boxset being listed for around 60 (pricing models can be absolutely bizarre, sometimes). I was about ready to order that, but knew I was going into town and picked up S2 for 30 in HMV, it wasn't until I got home I realised that S3 wasn't out until the new year, but if it had already been available I would have ordered it by now.

As to how I saw S3, just think of flowing water... ;)

I plan to buy the blu-ray, not paying for it twice.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

    Quotes are fun.
