Not sure I agree with any of this most recent foray into book wanker territory. GRRM knows how to write and write extremely well, and he's a master of the vignette and the individual scene. His characters are also varied and believable, and he has a very good knack for giving them their own voice and recalling it three books later.

What he can't do is a coherent overarching structure. His fascination with putting individuals into new situations, winding them up like clockwork toys and then seeing what they do, has become the dominating feature of his books. If that leads to the whole thing being ultimately unsatisfying it will be a crying shame.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Of course not, boobs are the mainstay of the thread, as well as blood. And "Bloody hell, Joffrey is a cunt!"

Yeah I've read the first one, and thought it was well written to be fair to him. Had the other ones to read as well but then I got Netflix and stuff so it didn't work out.

There's a tipping point where my views on his ability were altered radicaly. Not because of anything that happens to a particular character or a particular event or anything like that, I just found myself wishing that chapters would be fucking done with because they weren't going anywhere.

Probably getting a bit too specific for the thread now like so I'll bring this back to what's important.

If Daenarys takes the Iron Throne could she keep Margary as Queen? I'd buy that on DVD

Shit yeah! Someone send this to GRRM.

Also bringing us back to TV wanker land, I have some faith that HBO will steer this correctly so we at least get some kind of satisfying conclusion.

    Assuming it doesn't get cancelled.

    Remember Carnivale?

I can't see them doing that to GoT, though.

The difference is that Carnivale didn't have anywhere near the ratings that GoT is getting.

Shame, though. If Carnivale had been released now, I think it would have found enough of an audience to stay afloat.

GRRMs plots may be fine, but his writing is extremely derivative. I stopped reading because of this.

    Get bent.

What does derivative mean in this context? Genuine question.

The difference here being that GoT has existing novels to use for the story... Heroes didn't have a clue what to do after it's first season.

I think they now include Heroes in university modules as a good example of what happens when a show completely shits its pants.

There is a very real possibility it will go to shit after they run out of novels to adapt.

There's a very real possibility this will fuck up the novels as well.

The viewing figures for the second series were OK, they just fell through the floor when it became apparent that the first series was a complete and total fluke.

Yeah, the first series had a pretty strong storyline which zipped along at a nice pace, possibly due to the fact it had all been meticulously planned out ahead of time.

But season two onwards had absolutely no clue what it wanted to do with it's characters and story.

The first series was pretty good imo. Then we saw the teaser for season 2, and assumed it would be a continuation of an overarching plot. Eventually it became pretty clear that it wasn't. And then season 3 was different again. And then they stopped showing it on Channel 4 so I don't know what happened.

It was crazy and was clearly being made up as they went along. People got powers, lost powers, appeared and vanished as the writers painted themselves into a corner. I thought it was poor already but I officially gave up with it when they randomly gave Pacman the cataracts of mystery, allowing him to see into the future, completely at random.

And how they had to have sylar defeated because he was the bad guy but kept including increasingly outlandish ways to keep him in the plot. Like making him a petrelli, then taking it back almost immediately. It was absolutely laughable.

Must agree with this. Thought the first season was superb, the second series was just offensively bad.
