Not sure I agree with any of this most recent foray into book wanker territory. GRRM knows how to write and write extremely well, and he's a master of the vignette and the individual scene. His characters are also varied and believable, and he has a very good knack for giving them their own voice and recalling it three books later.|
What he can't do is a coherent overarching structure. His fascination with putting individuals into new situations, winding them up like clockwork toys and then seeing what they do, has become the dominating feature of his books. If that leads to the whole thing being ultimately unsatisfying it will be a crying shame.
