Can't wait. Aidan Gillen is great at playing a sneaky c*nt, and Dinklage as Tyrion is inspired casting.

I'm probably watching this... but I dunno about the next book, the last was ponderous and I don't really give a shit if any of the characters live or not.

I don't know about "inspired", he's the only good actor (that anyone is aware of anyway) who also happens to be a dwarf. I'd have said "competent", myself - and given it's an HBO series, competent isn't nearly as much of a surprise as it would be with a blockbuster hollywood film.
It's pleasing news, don't get me wrong: Tyrion's one of my favourite characters, not just in the series but in books, and Peter Dinklage is the actor I was hoping for as soon as I heard about the series.

Hah, you're absolutely right actually! Inspired is overegging it given the only dwarf actor I could think of that I can recall being any good, judging largely from The Station Agent, was him.

Believe it when I see it blah blah :(

That's pretty ignorant stuff there President Weasel. Dinklage was amazing in The Station Agent by any acting standard and has been great in other stuff such as Elf. It's great casting.

There are also plenty of alternatives such as Warwick Davis, Verne Troyer and whole agencies (like Willow agency) who have similarly statured actors on their books.

Maybe you misunderstood what I was saying? Peter Dinklage is an excellent actor who happens to be the right height to play Tyrion. He's the only sensible choice for the role which is why I think it's competent casting rather than inspired. As soon as I heard who they'd picked I thought "good, they didn't screw it up". And if I can see who the obvious choice is for the role then it should be child's play for someone who is paid money to cast people.
Now, if they'd cast someone from one of the agencies you mentioned, and he had turned out to be totally brilliant in the role, that would have been inspired casting.
Verne Troyer? Seriously? And I've never seen Warwick Davis in anything that impressed me half as much as Peter Dinklage did in the Station Agent.

Can't wait for this and so excited the new book is FINALLY en route.

There are a load of featurettes on youtube - which are only adding to my excitement.

Of course....shallow being that I am

    this interview headline

    caught my eye.

Never seen this actress before - let's hope she has the talent to bring Daenerys to life.

Everybody should just calm down a little bit and have a nice cup of tea.

    Heh.

But seriously - will this series ever be finished? G.R.R. Martin is 64.

Does it need to be "finished"? It's a fictional world, it doesn't need an ending.

I think that one would at least expect some conclusions for story strands to come to an end. With George Martin finishing a book this year perhaps we'll see a decent conclusion before the show finishes, if it isn't prematurely cancelled.

Anyone know if this is likely to be suitable for my 10 year old. He is so excited about it from the adverts but I'm thinking it might be a bit violent.

It's a gritty series of books (well I have only read the first two). It's not LOTR by any stretch and from seeing the footage and knowing the story you may want to show some caution - additionally it's HBO so don't expect it to be fluffy either (see Deadwood).

Best to watch it yourself first to make an informed decision, I guess.

I just wondered if anyone had seen it, but it hasn't even been on in the states has it?

Tell us more of these middle ages! I've heard 37 is particularly horrible.

    First 12 minutes:-

As someone who's never read the books, I thought it looked quite promising.

Noticed it has Sean ("Gandalf, I'll join t'fellowship after I finished mi shift down t'pit") Bean in it. I wonder if he'll be wearing his Sheffield Utd scarf? He might as well do, for all the realism/variety/acting skill he brings to a role.
