New York or South Shields, that must have been a tough decision.

He's been making 500K pa speechifying since Labour (well the unions anwyay) turned him down, clearly now feels 'you don't need me, I don't need you either'. I hope he gets Thunderbird 2, that's the best one.

Wait, the space lorry one? That's the one you think was the best? I question your judgement.

That does look like a recipe for increased crime.

I used to work on the New Deal scheme, which encouraged employers to take people on, and their (market) wages were subsidised for a period of time. It was like pulling teeth for teeth the most part but at least when taken on, employees got a decent salary. I remember helping one poor chap get work after 10 years on the dole, he was so chuffed. I was convinced he was pulling a fast one and was working but his confidence was so low, he just gave the impression he didn't care. Sadly after 3 weeks he broke his arm and was off work for another 2 months!

Will The Sun back UKIP at the next election?

I doubt it, for a number of reasons. But the whole UKIP thing is quite interesting. I was actually surprised to read they have no MPs and that isn't likely to change any time soon. So how come they (and Farage in particular) get so much media coverage? Farage is never off the Beeb.

Wouldn't be surprised to see The Sun back them at the European elections.

Michael Gove, you are a fuckwit. And this is a punch in the face.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/18/michael-gove-longer-school-day-holidays

I agree that school holidays are too long. But they should be shortening the school day to compensate, not lengthening it - there may be a case for teenagers, but there's only so much kids under 10/11 can take in. They'll be half asleep all afternoon. The rationale is barmy "the Chinese do it, so should we". Not to mention that most kids are at school that long for extra-curricular stuff anyway. All for more flexibility, such as the studies that show teenagers learn better later, so the day could be shifted. This just seems mad though

Yeah, lengthening the school day is a stupid idea. He's probably only suggested it because he knows that it will really piss the unions off and he wants to look strong against them.

Michael Gove has that classic Tory problem of not understanding how education works, not what people actually need to learn to get ahead.

Anything that pisses teachers off is good in my book :)

Dunno about lengthening the day, but definitely it's hard to argue against reducing school holidays.

@Chopsen what would make more sense is having making the Xmas and Easter holidays a bit longer, and then reducing the size of the summer holiday. So instead of 2wks, 2wks and 7wks, you get three holidays of 3wks each.

It's also good that kids have time off in the peak of summer to play outside and spend time with their friends outside school.

For a party that complains about the loss of childhood, forcing kids to learn for longer hours, with less holiday and loads of homework hardly gives them much of a childhood.

This is it. You know why the Chinese etc work hard? Because their life is shit and they are trying to educate themselves to get out and improve their life.
  • Deleted user 19 April 2013 13:04:26
We're getting our asses kicked by the Chinese work ethic though. Kids need to learn.

I would give them a few years off in the middle. I think you only really get much out of the first and last couple of years really so the bit in the middle could be cut.
