I'm considering this as it's simply more convenient to transfer my CD collection to digital and play through my iPod Touch. How does the apple air play feature work with my Windows 7 PC or my iPod Touch, do you need to pay for additional software or an adapter?

I imagine this is not the first product to use air play as I've been aware of it since iTunes 10 appeared.

Might depend on your version of iPod, but Airplay allows you stream from your iOS device straight to an Airplay compatible device. Works brilliantly from my experience.

That sounds good to me. So I assume you can stream direct from PC through itunes as well. Will check but my iPod Touch 32gb is a couple years old now but I have upgraded the software a couple times now. It has some weird game thing now which I never intend to use.

If your iPod Touch has volume buttons this should be fine as long as you update to the latest version of the firmware (iOS version 4.2.1).

For your Windows PC as long as you have the latest version of iTunes you will be fine.

I hear things about underwhelming sound and the styling aimed at the retarded audiophile without a clue market.

There are far more efficient ways of transferring your CDs to a digital format.

No, that's anything with Dr. Dre's name on it. At least the underwhelming sound part.

The two previous Zeppelin ipod docks are some of the best reviewed ipod docks going. For example...

I've heard the original one and for a ipod dock the sound is impressive.

True, the original Zeppelin has received fantastic reviews. Plus the new one can stream apple lossless audio. Therefore, I would expect to be at least as good as the original Zeppelin. Apparently tweaks have been made to the innards of the Zeppelin as well.

I do own a Meridian CD player but there are benefits in space saved and practicality when it comes to digital music players. The variance in audio quality is difficult for me to pick up on as my ears have been damaged by years of listening to music at ridiculous volumes.

Aside from reading those same reviews and then being wholly unimpressed by the bass over substance sound it made, it's an ugly POS.

Unison I-X5 or Vita Audio R4 is where my money would go if I were to bother with a dock, but they're all shit.

no, it reeks of looking around for a dock a while ago and seeing those, eventually doing what ecosse mentioned several posts up.

You can buy shit like that or for the same price get something like option 4 here

The difference is quality will not be small and there are better options than that.

Well I have available to me a Rotel power amp, Yamaha surround sound amp, Meridian CD player, NAD cassette deck and various other things.

It's great when you play it loud in a detached home with plenty of room. Unfortunately I don't have that luxury.

Therefore, I'm left with the option of a compact hi-fi or a dock. I actually think the Zeppelin looks great. Been a while since I heard one though, and that was only briefly.

Are there better options in respect of ipod docks or all-in-one type systems? The Vita does look quite unique but how it compares with the Zeppelin in terms of sound I'm not sure.

The new Zeppelin is said to be an improvement still and reviews have yet to appear.

Wether you're using a dock or otherwise, what sort of files do people play through these things? Are all compressed files types going to be shown up by a decent system, is lossless the only route?

Denon S-52DAB as well. I strongly recommend you go somewhere and listen for yourself. People seem to give the zepp extra points for looks, but it's quite small and the sound is more bassy as opposed to a balanced output with mids and trebles like the Vita R4, which is as far into audiophile quality as you can get for a dock.

Flac. MP3s sound shit on a good stereo, you can actually hear the bitrate's cut off points.

What digital stores sell flac files or do you buy CDs and rip them... or the 'third' option?

Or just go with 320k MP3s for convenience and not notice any difference.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Dirtbox, appreciate the comments. You obviously know your stuff.

    http://whathifi.com/News/CES-2011-BandW-adds-AirPlay-to-to-turn-Zeppelin-into-a-multiroom-system/

I just like the idea of laying in bed and controlling my music from the ipod without wires. But then I do tend to listen to an album in its entirety so CDs still get used a lot.
