In order to raise 2bn, the Government is selling all 650,000 acres of our forests a privatisation that even Margaret Thatcher blanched at.

    I have no words.

The government can't, can it? I thought at least some of it was Crown property or something. Surely it won't pass anyway, they'd have to be mental.

Surely, loads of our forest is protected by the National Trust?

    Beautiful tender beings.

So 3k for an acre of forest eh? I'll buy a few please and build my Rivendell-esque tree-world.

Isn't this the Independent's equivalent to the DM blaming immigrants for inflation? Shit if true though.

I think most of it is forestry commission rather than National Trust. The sell-off is next step after getting rid of the forestry commission I think.

Yet another terrible idea from our wonderful lords and masters.

    My comment?
"Don't sell, it'll be like when Gordon Brown sold off our gold, except with trees!"

Possibly not, but it makes me feel better about myself and allows me to look down on others.

It's not really surprising. Most Tories have their own private forests so they don't need the riff raff forests.

Make sure you fix the platforms securely to the trees, I'd hazard a guess that an Ewok weighs a lot less than you.

Just being realistic. Signing a petition is likely to be about as useful as mooning out your car window in Parliament Square.
Is there a web page for that?

Yeah, what do governments care about mass public opinion? It's not like like that same public vote for them or anything.
