Geohot has released the keys required to encrypt a PS3 executable. Custom firmwares ahoy!!

    So it begins.

Or ends. Or .. something faux-momentus.

Pretty interesting development. The next few week's news will be fun to observe.

Actually, asking a mod to change the title of the original thread might be better yer.

This is such bad news for Sony.. I almost feel sorry for them, but it'll give me a means of playing all the games they don't let me import so pfffft.

I'm almost as interested in the commercial and corporate ramifications for Sony here and how they tackle what is an enormous blow to their platform's image as a secure gaming platform.

A blow? It looks more like the PS3 has no more security at all. It is going to be the Wild West soon. I bet we will see full piracy of any game in 2 months sadly.

No, but they'll probably disable running firmware updates from USB, as they'll be editing then resigning the firmware update package so they can install the apps (other executables refuse to boot from anything other than the hdd)

I doubt this will make even the slightest difference to anything.

Well at least they ought to see a big sales increase in hardware.

Last time PS3 was exploited, hardly anybody cared. Doubt it'll be open season like it was with PS2.
  • Deleted user 2 January 2011 23:07:02
ZOMG !!! does this mean they can try making non backwards compatible PS3s actually play PS2 games ?

If so this could make Sony sweat and release a device which would allow PS2 backwards compatibility for all...is that right ?
  • Deleted user 2 January 2011 23:09:15
Would I be right in saying that if the PS3 was exploited and people had full access to the system it would make a great media centre?
  • Deleted user 2 January 2011 23:12:07
Please for the love of god find a way to bring PS2 backwards compatibility back.

I doubt it will do PS2 back compat, there are bits of hardware in the PS2 that the PS3 cannot emulate without the hardware they dropped from the older units. Hence all the HD remakes not so much being just the old games through emulation, its the old games re-worked.

Won't happen. They could port a very weak version of pcsx2 to the PS3, but don't expect BC.

  • Deleted user 2 January 2011 23:26:22
No, but you'll be able to spin all your old vinyl.
