I've got about £750 burning a hole in my pocket and figure it's about time I upgrade my camera. I'm considering an NEX-5N since I've seen the focus peaking feature, might be nice for my OM lenses. I'd like to stay with Olympus but aside from the expensive OMD their sensors haven't improved since my E-P1 and I'm thinking I'd like to try something a little better in the low light. I am concerned about AF speed though I believe it's much improved after a recent update by Sony?

Is there anything I should consider? I'm thinking NEX-5N + 16mm + 18-55mm... and I'm thinking I'll get it tomorrow morning so any advice would be nice tonight :)

I think the Nex 5N is pretty much the bees knees at the moment if you're looking for a CSC. May also be worth looking at the Nikon V1 if focus-speed is a priority, and I've not looked up reviews of the new Sony bottom-end Sony that uses the same sensor as the 5N to see what you lose, but if image quality is paramount, the 5N is hard to beat.

The F3 is more expensive for whatever reason, I guess a new 5N is incoming soon. Not so interested in the Nikon, seems overly expensive and the sensor size puts me off, I'd rather get an Olympus ZX-1.

@AaronTurner For £750 you could buy yourself an X100. Do it!

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

I'd like an X100 and I'd enjoy the focal length but as a main camera it's a bit limiting. If I had the cash to blow as a 2nd camera I'd do it for sure.

Are those Nex lenses not as shit as they're made out to be then?

I think they are shit on the 24mp sensor but fine for the 16. I have a bunch of OM mount lenses and to be honest it's the focus peaking that sold me the idea of getting an nex.

Well I have it now so if anyone thinks the nex 5n is shit then keep it to yourself :)

Hmm, first problem, no guard for the sensor when no lens is attached? And no guard for the rear of the 2nd kit lens? This assumes that I will always have one of these lenses on the camera which won't be the case. Is this just something I'm missing or do Sony really not pay the few pennies for a couple of covers?

None of the mirrorless cameras have any sort of protection for the sensor with the lens off, do they? But I assume they all have sensor cleaning tech, and to be honest, no DSLR has sensor protection - there's a big gap between the mirror and the sensor and any dust or crap could easily find its way onto the sensor.

Yeah a body cap for when there is no lens attached. Certainly all my Olympus stuff has come in the past with suitable caps for all parts. It's a very cheap skate thing to not provide them. It just means I now have to source caps as well as a converter. It's a waste of time and an inconvenience for the sake of saving a few pennies. Nothing like pissing off a customer as soon as they open the box!

Was the lens on the body in the box then?

Yeah, the 18-55mm comes attached. It's a bit of a cheap move by Sony, no doubt they think everyone will run out and buy their official lens caps.

Correct Aaron, you need to buy the body and lens caps yourself. You can get knock-offs on ebay for pennies though that work perfectly.

If you buy a standalone lens they do come with rear caps. But not the camera+lens kits. Pretty tight.

Amazing camera though, still loving mine, rivals my (semi-pro, full-frame) D700 for image quality.

Also I've just bought the 50mm f1.8 OSS - fastest lens in the world with stabilisation! Great for portraits and also for video.

I have an OM Mount 50mm 1.4 that'll do me instead, I think it's likely still a bit long for regular use for me. If I had the dollars I'd get the 24mm but I'll need to win the lottery first.

The new Sigma 30mm in NEX mount is getting RAVE reviews and is nice and petite, almost as small as the 16mm. It's only f2.8 mind so not ultra-fast, but the high ISO on the 5N is so good that might not matter.

Oh and it's dirt cheap :)

Yeah, that's on the purchase list, they didn't have it in the shop today. I think it'll be the next buy after I get my converter (and lens covers :( )

Let us know what it's like. Tempted myself, but I've already got the 16mm, 18-55 and 50/1.8 and the 5N is only my second camera really so I'm being sensible :)

Well I was going to head into town and give the camera a good seeing to this eve but of course the overground is broken. Arse.

The Sigma is a monster, I can't believe it gave my Reference lens (Nikkor 24-70) an even match. These 2 are the best wide open performers I got in my arsenal. Mechanical quality is so so, the rattling noise inside is "normal" apparently but still worries me now and then. Not at sub 200€ though.

Should have had the 18-55 zoom in that test, my copy is actually a very good performer at 5.6 and below. Others have had issues, so QA seems a bit flaky.

Oh, sunset image from a few days ago with the kit lens:

The RAW image quality is amazing, the 5N's sensor beats my D7000's which is pretty damn impressive.

Delicious. Of course this camera will make me an excellent photographer.

Anyway, it seems to have done a far better job of the black dog on a bright day test then my EP1 managed but getting to grips with the menu system is something else.

The 5n is amazing. I charge it up at night and put the thing in my pocket for the day. My dslr didn't get 1/10th of the action this has seen and in all kinds of places I wouldn't have dreamed of holding a big camera.

The only thing I'd say is if you want to use it as a street camera and not miss those chance shots then pre-focus it in manual and use it like that, as the auto-focus can sometimes just take long enough to miss the perfect shot.

skuzzbag, get a wide angle and set it at its hyperfocal length at f/8. The wider the lens, the deeper the focus. My Voigtländer 16/4 at f/8 has everything in focus from 1,4m to infinity.

I'd argue that setup, tilted LCD and viewfinder, with NEX in S mode and Auto ISO is the perfect street photo setup. RAW gives you enough quality for serious cropping should you need it. I've taken pictures of people right in front of me without them noticing, it is that stealthy. :)

Some examples (first 2 are taken with Pentax Takumar 50mm/1.4 though):

    Nice set.

The Sigma 19mm is getting good reviews but now it looks like I need a Takumar 50mm as well!

I read up on hyper focal focusing but because I'm dim I don't quite get how to set-up my lens. How would I work out how to set it on the 16mm lens?
  • Deleted user 26 May 2012 14:15:37
Use this site mate, according to it at f/4, everything beyond 2.4m is in focus. At f/8 that range is reduced to 1.3m:

I love this "point and shoot" setup which is kind of ironic, considering how much time we spend to get away from the P&S cameras. :)

Thanks, just did a wee test using the lcd screen zoomed in and it seems that I have to focus a little further than it suggests. Going to give it a shot though!
