I was in HMV christmas shopping today and was browsing their hilariously priced pre-owned games (Red Dead for only 37.98!) and one of their staff was talking to a woman of an older persuasion about the Kinect bundles they had. He went through all of the games that come with the bundle and her only response was 'so it does what the Wii does?' to which he responded 'Yes exactly.'

It piqued my interest so I listened in on the conversation and she mentioned that it was going in the study for her grandkids to play with when they came around. I don't know if he didn't hear her or ignored her or whatever but he kept right on through telling her how much like the Wii it was and eventually left her to her own devices.

She was picking up the most expensive bundle (game with 3 games I think) so I felt like I had to tell her about the space she would need (at least 6 feet or 8 feet for 2 players with some lateral space). I said she might be able to get away with less but it would have different results on different games. She was really shocked and told me she was putting it in her study so it would be no good. She then left the shop.

It just made me wonder how many people are going to experience the same problem on Christmas day. Although it might have been a genuine mistake from the staff guy ti felt pretty underhanded that he was selling ehr this 250+ piece of kit but not explaining the requirments for it.

    Shame on HMV!

GAME have been pushing it far more than HMV. Buy a PS3 game from GAME and they would still ask me if I wanted to pre-order Kinect :/

Can't blame them though, they need to push whatever they can (and I assume they can make quite a hefty profit off Kinect too).

What annoys me far more is all the advertising being put out for Kinect.

Namely: A 360 with Kinect, with 2 games! For just £399.99!

Erm, one of those games is Kinect Adventures, which is fucking FREE with every Kinect sensor you morons. So stop advertising it like you were giving away yourselves.

It's borderline conman sales tactics, and should be outlawed.

I agree with this. If you are going to be spending so much money on something, then basic research is needed, and if you get stung, then it's your own fault.

It's like all those people who buy shitty unreliable cars. If you are going to be spending that much money on a car, then RESEARCH THE BLOODY THING FIRST! It's not hard.

Yeah, but they are implying that it's them who are giving the game free, like it's an offer.

    It's not.

Remember, the price of Adventures will be added to the basic price of Kinect anyway, so it's not really free anyway.

I see that but as long as what they say is technically true you can't really expect any more of them

Aye, same as the PSP Go with 10 free games signes they have.

    Nothing is false.

1st party hardware is always very low margin (typically 5%), hence the limited variation in price and the need to always bundle it with high margin shit.

Oh and I'd be inclined to think its ignorance rather than anything more sinister the guy was working on. They don't work on comission and if there's one thing shop assistants hate its post-christmas returns hell. Doesn't excuse pisspoor product knowledge though.

It was the exact same thing with the Wii and Wii Sports, only some companies even advertised that as having 5 free games.

Could be worse. I saw adverts for Wii with Wii Sports when it first came out saying it came with 5 games. It seemed to stop fairly quickly, I presume the ASA had words.

The staff in HMV probably don't know or are told to sell it that way. Because it's a bit shit they probably are unaware of the space requirements 'cos they don't play it :)

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Older people are of an age where you were actually given genuine information by salespeople, rather than bullshit off the box from a 23 year old waster.

I remeber being lied to in Boots when they still did games back in 1985. But yes people of my mother's generation seem to have much higher expectations of shop staff. Having worked in record stores in the late 90s-early 00s I can sympathise though, so much new stuff comes out, particularly at christmas its very hard to keep up and head offices tend to be pretty shit at giving support. If I wasn't sure though I would always say so and offer to check, which people seemed to appreciate way more than the bluffers.

GAME have done this for a while, hardly surprised HMV have jumped on the bandwagon, though I can understand if it was an honest mistake from staff who didn't know much about what they were saying (probably should have got someone in who did though if that was the case). However I do agree with Jazzy and Somatic that if you're going to spend a lot of money on something then you should at least do a bit of research on it and if you can't then at least take someone along with you who knows a bit more and can read through the salesman spiel.

With regard to the false representation on the "free" games, it's similar to Curry's when they started advertising how they will take away your old appliances for free and recycle them for you.

What they completely failed to mention was that was what they had to legally do when a change of the law came in, not because they'd suddenly developed a green conscience.

When I went in to Game to ask about the Sony Move the conversation went something like this:

"Hi, how much are you doing the Move for?"
"It's works out more for a Move with 2 controllers than the Kinect"
"Okay, but how much is the Move?"

It was on the launch weekend of the Kinect, so maybe he was all about the Kinect system but I was like "WTF".

They can be quite persuasive though.

"All you have to do is give us a £30 deposit, and when you come in on release day it'll cost you less than a £100!" -_-

And then the explanation of it being bundled with a free game worth £40 so it's actually cheaper than you think etc.

I quite happily payed for my copy of Aterlier Rorona, in a que full of New Vegas and FIFA buyers, and walked out.

Edit: Worst part, had my niece with me. "She'll absolutely love Kinectimals". Fuck off.

Because of course, its totally acceptable that mums should be looking up technical specs on a site like this one, rather than just being able to ask questions of sales staff who, at least in theory, are meant to be able to give advice as part of their job.

Its a shop, not a warehouse.

As a previous sales assistant waster, I can confirm that there are some people who will ourtright lie there asses off for comission.

I never did such and I wasn't particularly popular for confronting people who did either. I honestly can't see why someone who isn't on comission doing this is on purpose though.

He probably wasn't a a serious gamer. If I explained Kinnect to my mum [who has a wii] or to some of my friends, they would be 'Oh, it's the same as the Wii then'.

OP did a good thing though.

In one of my jobs we are told we must not lie to the customers for a sale, as it means when they realise that we lied to them they wont come back.

That was pretty much the line of thinking where I worked.

On my interview I was led around by some greasy cunt, who then popped out with the question 'Do you lie for a sale or not?'... I had sussed him out pretty well and gave an answer similar to yours. A greasy, jagged smile spread over his face and I got the job.

    I still cut myself.
