I imagine this thread will provide companies like Rockstar and Valve with a lot of love (deservedly so) while Activision will no doubt have their name dragged through the mud (or Kotick at least!).

As things stand, My favourite publisher at the moment is EA. Since they have brought John Riccitiello and Peter Moore on board there has been a steady increase in quality. Their investment in developers like Bioware, Criterion, Harmonix, Visceral and DICE has paid off big time and they've impressed me no end in recent years.

When it comes to developers, Criterion have stood out for their excellent support of Burnout Paradise and their recent NFS effort, but my vote goes to Gearbox purely because of Borderlands. They managed to create something fresh and exciting at a time when the FPS genre was a bit stale. The fact that they've picked up the new Duke Nukem and (hopefully) have Aliens : Colonial Marines on the agenda makes them a very exciting developer in my eyes.

    Platinum games.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

    This. Valve are great IMO.

Although if Gearbox continue to develop to the level of the sheer excellence of Borderlands, it'll possibly be them next time this gets asked.

Doublefine and Notch aren't publishers, just devs.

    Technically, neither is Valve.

Although my brain only read a small portion of the thread title, so ignore me.

Rocksteady! Batman AA was an amazing game for a debut in that genre.

Pinebear, have you had a stroke?

Everyone knows Jack Thompson - but how did he become the game-blaming activist he is today? Read Part One of my new mini-series!

I'm not even sure you can level the pricey claim at them. The Orange Box was superb value at full price, let alone the 6 or so it goes for in sales nowadays. Perhaps the only blip was L4D2 at 30, but their games get discounted pretty damn quickly, I've found. Everything else on Steam they don't actually set the prices for themselves.

On the PC maybe, L4D stayed pretty high for years after it was released on 360.

Housemarque. SSDHD and Dead Nation are fantastic.

Valve would be my runner-up I guess.

Almost all devs and publishers nowadays suck :/

    I'm sure PS3 owners would agree :)

In all seriousness, best developer for me is Naughty Dog right now and best publisher would be Nintendo EAD.

RedLynx gets an extremely honourable mention too.

Valve best publisher by far. Honourable mention to EA as they actually get most of my cash for their quailty games and the new download manager is quite cool, but some of their treatment of consumers sucks and stops them being top (DLC, online pass, testing the Ubi DRM on C&C4).

Developer is a tough one as while there are loads of great devs no one really stands out as number 1 TBH. Rocksteady spring to mind Batman was an amazing high quality game and I'm excited about more from them. With honourable mention to Visceral Games for giving me one of my fav new IPs this gen in Dead Space.

    pinebear is awesome.

I don't really have a preference for publishers, but I would say PlatinumGames is my favourite dev right now. There are so many awesomely talented devs though, picking one is tough.
