Some great quotes from Joe Cole
    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4826463/Joe-Cole-amits-Liverpool-move-was-wrong.html
Yet Cole soon realised he was not going to fit in at Liverpool after signing in 2010. He said: “When I joined, the guy interviewing me said ‘you’ve joined the biggest club in the country’ and reeled off the trophies they’d won.

“I just said ‘yeah, if you put it like that, I suppose you’re right’ and Liverpool used that as the headline to the interview.

“I didn’t want to upset anyone so I just went along with it. But obviously they’re not the biggest club in the country any more.

Or even the biggest club in Liverpool any more.

Joe Cole, a man with a great future behind him. He never really fitted in at Liverpool because he's washed up and it was a stupid idea to buy him - shades of Freddie Sheperd Newcastle's trademark "look, we've bought another player you've heard of, we're a big club!".

Going to Liverpool ruined him, but I think at the time he still had a lot to give. He made a really big mistake choosing them over Spurs. We would have been perfect for him and I think his career would have had a resurgence with us.

Yeah he mentions that was probably a better option in the article but he felt he couldn't put on a Spurs shirt after playing for West Ham and Chelsea.
He didn't live fully up to his potential but he had some great moments in a Chelsea shirt, this goal being one of my favourites

Seems a bit hypocritical to say he couldn't move to Spurs having once left West Ham to play for Chelsea, but whatever I guess.

I think he was a childhood Chelsea fan
  • Deleted user 6 March 2013 12:50:04
    Heh.

The other thing about the Spurs move would have been that it would have been to play under Harry, and I don't think many would have blamed him for doing that, or seen it as mercenary.

His career didn't need a resurgence, he'd just played a big part in a title winning team.

Chelsea were daft letting him go.

Had he really played a big part? Not how I remember it.

He played 40 odd games iirc. Not to mention he started, and scored in the title decider at Old Trafford.

Not the markings of a player who's career needs a shot in the arm.

England's answer to their left midfield problem.
  • Deleted user 6 March 2013 13:10:27
I think you're misremembering. He was a peripheral figure in the season before he left as I remember it.

Wiki says he played 20 games in 08/09 and came back to play 39 in total 09/10.

I definitely remember the little choad scoring in that title decider in April, too.

I like Joe Cole. Was gutted it never worked out for him with us. I hope he does well in the last stage of his career. Great little player in my book

Just 26 league games though, and no indication of how many of those as a sub.

He may have scored an important goal or two but his career was very much on the wane. I don't think he'd have been going on a free to Hodgson's Liverpool if he'd have been such a massive player for Chelsea.
  • Deleted user 6 March 2013 13:17:18
I wanted Joe at United :(
  • Deleted user 6 March 2013 13:19:04
I think he was/is a real talent. Always played out of position at Chelsea as they had a need for slightly different players centrally, and then wasted at Liverpool.

Again, being made ACM at Spurs would have been the perfect move for him.

    @Leoliansbro

Crouch was quality for Liverpool. Always thought we sold him too early. He had a slow start but once he got going he was proper.

Scored a perfect hat trick for us as well Right foot, left foot then a header bosh

Logic is irrelevant with regards to Chelsea, you only need to look at their refusal to give Lampard a new contract. Utter madness.

Maybe my memory is hazy, but I think they'd of been better off keeping him. I'd have certainly had him at United.

He played 1286 minutes in 09/10, so about 38% of the PL season. Two goals, six assists.

I think in his last season at Chelsea he came off the bench more then he started. most fans wanted to see him given a new contract but Ancelotti wasn't using him so it was understandable when they let him go in the end.

I suspect that might be to do with the fact he was part of the group of senior players involved in forcing AVB out of the club. Perhaps they are sensibly trying to remove those who think they are bigger than the club.

Lampard is obviously great, but Chelsea have some serious talent coming through in the middle of the pitch and considering Lampard's wages and FPL coming in, I can see the argument for moving on.

We wanted him to stay, but Portsmouth offered to triple his wages. Can't really compete with that.

You must have been paying him about £20k a week in that case, as he was on no more than £60k at Spurs.

He would of been on more then that, surely (at Liverppol I mean)

I can't find any proof, but I remember it being talked about a lot at the time. There's a few articles that claim Pompey offered him £75k a week.

Couple of papers going with Rooney being sold in the summer. I can see it, to be honest.
