Lloris is a very good goalkeeper and Spurs got him for a good price. There was no guarantee he wouldn't have been pinched by another club if they hadn't have got him when they did. Friedel is coming to the end of his career, Lloris has years and years left. I don't understand what the confusion is.

A 41 year old didn't need a successor lining up? Better getting him a year early than rushing into a panic buy where you end up paying too much for someone not very good who might not have the physique to handle the premiership.

I see Owen has dived into the debate on, errm, diving and to no-one's surprise, admitted going down easily to win pens for England. Notably vs Argentina in 98 and 2002.

He said he could have stayed on his feet but that in his estimation in more than 75% of fouls the player could stay on their feet.

Don't think he's said anything wrong really.

Remember that video of the guy (in South America) getting chased around with the opposition trying the kick the shit out of him? He had 3 or 4 people trying the kick his legs out from under him and he stayed on his feet. It's fucking hard to make somebody fall over if they want to stay on their feet.

    Brap, brap, old chap.

None of it is new or a surprise, and he maintains there was contact etc. Guess the key question isn't necessarily could he have stayed on his feet, it's could he have stayed on his feet and still had a decent chance on goal.

Unfotunately, it seems you aren't eligible for a pen if you stay upright. I could count on one hand the amount of times I've seen a player remain on his feet after a clear foul in the box and win a penalty. Sad really.

Exactly. Unfortunately referees seem to have it ingrained into their mind that if the player stays on his feet its no pen, which of course is wrong. A player does not have to be rolling around on the floor to be fouled.

That said, these days its the mentality of "well i went down because I knew if I didn't I wouldn't have got a pen. And if the other team were in the same position they would have gone down too".

    It's just the culture now.

i dont think players need to remain on their feet if theres contact.

Theres a fine line between going down because there was contact and Suarelation er i mean simulation, but the line is still there

It's so fucking boring. Aside from obviously being talented, his fuck-up could and probably should have made our day a lot harder last Sunday. Can't afford to do that against Chelsea, and we've got a keeper who hasn't done anything like that in reserve. If I was manager, I'd play Friedal too.

    Fucking press bollocks.
I think people might also be missing the two moment where Lloris saved possible goal scoring opportunities by coming off his line early. Friedel would never have done that as he has never been quick off his line. So despite one mistake he also stopped two very decent opportunities.

You are a factory of sadness.

    This was also said about diving last night;

@themichaelowen: Legendary ref, P.Collina says a player has every right to go down if touched provided that player doesn't use an unnatural stride to trip.

Fair point, yep. But still there's a difference between averting danger and creating it yourself by lack of composure.

It's kind of irrelevant anyway. There's a reasonable argument to play either against Chelsea, and he'll be damned whichever he plays.

He could be the ultimate troll and sub Lloris on at half time.
  • Deleted user 11 October 2012 17:19:50
Or play Gomes with Cudicini on the bench.

He should play Vertonghen in goal.
  • Deleted user 11 October 2012 17:31:31
He'd probably be fucking amazing there. I think he'd probably be the best player on the pitch in every position.

Done the Mersey injuries yet? Fellaini's out for 3 weeks and misses the derby and Borini has broken a bone in his foot

Is the 3 weeks definite? There's been some debate among fantasy managers. Shame about Borini though. Still, gives us the chance to play some 14 year olds instead.

Is it worth having a sweepstake on which Liverpool player stamped on his foot so he couldn't play again for a few weeks?
