Lallana is going to miss the start of the season with an injury...and we have plenty of options to take his place.

I don't know what to think any more.

I guess Reus would be starting ahead of him anyway.

Still not sure I believe that yet. Not that I have a clue who he is.

Ornstein just confirmed on the medical. Another BBC journalist says we want Schneiderlin too.

Chambers is quality, shrewd move picking him up before this season starts IMO - think his value would skyrocket before next.

Selling off so many of the seniors was bad enough, now flogging off the kids.

Keeping some of the money I hope, sorting out their finances, not spending all their money on hasbeens and ageing almost-weres. Being the anti-Portsmouth.

Their finances are fine though no? They had a billionaire owner who died and left them everything.

While it won't happen, Vidal is the exact type of player we need to plug up our susceptible midfield.

Damn that sorcerer! Twenty gold pieces and Iím wankered on Rohypnol.

Thought that was being challenged by billionaire owner's hard-headed offspring? And anyway that's not the point, it's morally right for a football club to live within its means (yeah yeah I am an unrealistic fool).

IIRC, quite a bit of structured debt from speculation in lower leagues (subsequently paid off) and their new state of the art cat 1 academy.

Obviously should all be sorted now, but have they gone too far?

    Wait. What? Chambers? 16 MILLION?

Vermealen must be off then, hopefully to Barca rather than United, think he can come back stronger.

As you say, it's not going to happen, but I'm not sure I'd want to spend £40m in that position tbh.

Maybe the biggest fuck up of Fergie's last few years was Pogba, he'd be absolutely perfect.

Off topic, but West Brom are about to play their second friendly in a row against Sacramento Republic FC (it's not one of those big-money US tours - this team only signed their first player in April, and they play in the "third tier" in a nation without relegation or promotion). I'm nevertheless excited, however, because Sacramento Republic broadcast all their matches live on Youtube, and this one is no exception.

In the first friendly, Graham Dorrans scored a penalty in the first half, and their main commentator, who was enthusiastic but a bit off on his terminology, proceeded to call it "a free kick" for the rest of the match whenever he talked about it, culminating in... well.

If the link above doesn't work, skip to 1:27:30 to hear probably the best example of American soccer commentary you'll ever hear:

Graham Dorrans with a free kick on Jake Gleeson right in front of the goal box. Big easy penalty kick for him in that situation.

Vidal is the closest thing to yaya Toure outside of Manchester.

That £40 million could genuinely win the league for a top four club.

I'm somewhat of a fan of Vidal, is what I'm saying.

I do wonder which team has the best all-time "players we couldn't make work" list? Man Utd would have to be right up there, with Pogba, Pique, Forlan... even Giuseppe Rossi was the top scorer in Serie A last season before he got injured.

Poborski was the one I couldn't get my head around. Absolutely no reason why he shouldn't have been mustard for United.

I'd say probably not. Stam was a big player at Man Utd (IIRC - I only really properly got into football in the 2001-02 season), which makes him more of a "we miss his contributions" than a "if only we knew" situation. Pogba, Pique and Rossi barely got a chance, and Forlan played a lot but just didn't work out for them.

How's Ravel Morrison thought of these days? There was a period where everyone considered him to be "the one that got away", but I haven't followed him lately.

Turned the corner a bit in terms of getting his head down but not getting what you'd call fabulous support from his manager:

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/feb/20/sam-allardyce-ravel-morrison-agent-west-ham

Sam wants shot of him, reckon 'Arry might snap him up, he did okay for QPR last season.

Will Southampton have any players left at the start of the season? I can see them going down if they carry on like this. I thought Norwich had bought some decent foreigners last season and look what happened there. Shaw, Lovren, Chambers, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Lambert and Oswaldo have left or are likely to leave. That's seven first-team players and Rodriguez will probably leave in January if he recovers in time.

Yeah, but at the same time they got LOADS of money for it. Including loans that ended, we (West Brom) have lost 10 senior players (well 12, technically, but Scott Allan never played for us in the league, and George Thorne's last league appearance for us was before last season), all of them on a free, other than Thorne, who we sold for ~£2m. We had literally zero senior full backs left.

When the initial exodus of players happened at the end of last season, I predicted on here we'd probably finish 20th this upcoming season. Even now, having brought in Lescott, Gardner and Chris Baird on frees, Andre Wisdom on loan, and a couple of cash signings with Pocognoli and Brown Ideye (along with more signings to come. Another full back is expected on Saturday) I think I'd be happy if we just avoided relegation.

If we can manage that with just £2m income from player sales having lost 10-12 senior players, Southampton should be alright. I think they'll spend well but sensibly, and they'll finish higher than a lot expect.

How many foreign players have good first seasons in the Premier League especially the sort of players who will sign for the likes of Southampton?

I think they can assemble a squad capable of staying up without spending a penny.

They've got quite a few youth products coming through the conveyor belt too. Hence going for Koeman - this is their business model, and I'm slightly jealous my club hasn't done the same.
