It comes after US rivals Nike decided to end their association at the end of the coming 2014-15 season.

Nike have been paying United 23.5m a year, and the new deal is believed to be a worth a world record-breaking 70m a season to the Old Trafford club.

Champions League winner Real Madrid's 31m-a-year deal with Adidas was previously the biggest club deal.

Adidas will provide training and playing kit to all of the club's teams. In addition, it will have the exclusive right to distribute dual-branded merchandising products worldwide.
    Adidas = 70m a year
    Chevrolet - 53m a year
AON - 120m overall for training ground and kits.

    How the fuck.

And that's why Moyes had to go.

You might have another convert soon. Thanks to that bloody advert thats on every five minutes, my daughter is now obsessed with the tottenham turfies website.

I don't think anyone thought that. The thing about this deal is that it includes revenues others don't disclose and is also for 10 years. Not inconceivable that other club's revenues might reach or overtake that given inflation etc.

I've really no idea what that's all about, but it sounds like it's working if that was the intent, so yay.

They're running out of people to sign though tbh, they still need a fair few additions to their squad and all their targets seem to be going elsewhere.

We have no chance of signing Reus, but neither does anyone else, he's one of those rarities who actually loves his club. Plus I think most players see the english prem as a step down now compared to the bundesliga.

    Yeah I don't think that's it.

There were reports he was pissed off that Barca went for Suarez instead of him.

These days unless you play for Madrid or Barca, you're a player that can be bought (although perhaps only by one of those two).

I think it's also true that almost anyone can be bought from those two teams even if you're an important player for them, there's always the need for a new marquee signing.

Yeah, although in hindsight selling Ozil and buying Bale does seem to have been a far more sensible decision than it appeared at the time.

Markovic is having his medical at Liverpool.

I would be excited if I had the first clue who he was...

True, but my point was more to illustrate how much power the top two teams have in transfers, it might seem like they hog all the top talent but they also make them more accessible for the other teams out there, they just want to play with them first.

He scored less goals than Bebe in the Portuguese league last season. That might indicate his level.

I guess. Every now and then a scrap falls from the mouths of giants for us mere mortals to feed on. Generally you get them on the way back down career wise.

I dunno, Di Maria looks set to leave, Ozil obviously, Sanchez, Robben, Van Der Vaart etc.

Obviously some like VDV were on the way down but more often than not it's because there's a new "must have" player and perfectly good players get moved on. Robben is probably the prime example.

Nah, Rodger's had a fair bit to spend even without the Suarez sale, 50 million was what was reported

Think you're being a touch cynical. The need to bring in exciting new players is a factor in their dealings yes, but I don't agree that they just cast aside perfectly good players in order to do that. Robben made way for Ronaldo who improved them. Sanchez has made way for Suarez who is better. Ozil made way to allow Modric to thrive, as well as paying for Bale, which improved them. Di Maria is a sick note liability etc.

Yes, that does mean these players become available but I don't think they consider their next move as a step up from Real Madrid.

Sometimes I get the feeling football managers* get the feeling I get in FM: got a great team, but time to move on that superstar to bring in another, just cos I feel like it.

    *at Real and Barcelona.

I think it's worth talking about these players in terms of their ability rather than their careers, of course their careers are going to go down (however much) after they leave Madrid/Barca/Bayern because they are the absolute pinnacle but it doesn't mean their ability declines after they leave.

Perhaps you're right about the reasons why these players are let go, but my point is they are perpetually looking for the best new talent and that often means world class players go to these big teams but a fair few of them also leave.

Can't get over the size of that adidas deal. Reading here:

"@thedevilstweets: To put the deal into perspective, Adidas paid $400m over 11 years to sponsor the entire NBA league..."

Scary amount of money. And the debt repayments have been reduced from about 70% of revenue each year in 2010 to circa 15% now and the debt should be completely eliminated by 2017. If LvG gets us back in the CL this year the Glazers are laughing all the way to the bank.
