You'll get sixth. Villa have, basically, given up for the season.

    @nickthegun

Maybe, but Alex Ferguson used to do that, with success.

Yes, you are right. If you are an academy player for the best team in the league, the best time to join the game is when they are cruising at 3-0.

I agree with both parts. Seems like odd behaviour.

Captain Obvious says: the general consensus seems to be that if you are good enough for a europa place, you should be good enough for a push at the top four next year and the europa being the slog that it is hampers that.

Liverpool have pretty much, rightly or wrongly, cemented that this year.

Spurs have a massive squad. Why wouldn't you want Europa action?

I can see why smaller clubs with small squads wouldn't. It was a major contributing factor to my team going down.

The Europa league is a slog but the promise of Champions league place at the end of it should sweeten it a little.

They need to remove the top 5 leagues (PL, La Liga, L1, SA) from the first few rounds of the Europa league. If they already do that then they need to introduce the teams even later.

The Europa league SHOULD be worth it but I can see why it isn't at the moment.

They need to either get it off a Thursday or make sure the teams participating always have a Monday night match as their next one. OR, sensibly, don't have it on the same week as a Champions League list and have them on Tues/Weds.

Why not have it on the same days as the champions league?

I know it will diminish the viewing figures but most people apart from fans of the teams that participate don't really give a shit anyway.

The neutrals will probably watch the champions league game anyway. How many people actually bother watching the Europa league when their team isn't playing anyway?

They should have the Europa League Final as 5 minutes a half at half-time in the Champion's League final. Penalties versus the team mascots in goal if it's undecided after that.

Precisely that. Revenue. Advertising. Bad business sense.

Just slap it in the following week, alternate it. As long as the matches get played and there is time to breathe.

The EL would be better if the 3rd place teams in the CL groups didn't get added to the knockout stage.

    That too.

I suppose them adding the champions league at the end of a winning campaign is proof that they're at least thinking about how to improve it.

Some amazing out of the box ideas on this page.

Add TNG Network Solutions to the group stages, it's ok, they've got a CL spot to aim for

And play the EL on the same nights as the CL

    :D

Nobody is ever going to value the Europe League as long as it's just the safety net for the big cash cow teams that crash out of the CL.
If they want people to care about the Europa League (and also to care about the Milk Cup again) then they should make it the Cup Winners' Cup again; only open to teams who've won a cup. Spice it up a bit by letting the teams with really big squads enter both it and the CL, if they want a quixotic tilt at a historic double.
As long as it's "the one you get into by coming 5th in the PL or fucking up the qualifying round of the actual good European competition" it's only ever going to be a chore.

That said, I was pretty fucking excited that year Celtic nearly went all the way in it.

Approximately 100% more people than if you put it in direct competition with the champions league.

Yeah, if I had a chance from a cursory watch of the EL or the CL, I'd go for what is happening in the CL every time.

When there is no competition on the airwaves, I'm always happy to sit and have a watch of Everton playing FC Mentalist or someone.

They should play mid-week on an off week for the CL, though. But then that upsets domestic cup competitions, I suppose.

In summary: its shit and doomed

I always want Liverpool to do well in it when they have participated, I don't know anybody who wants their team to do badly in any competitive fixture. Friendlies even.

Thinking back, that year of the cup treble was outstanding. What a final that was too.

I dont think so. Its one of those 'common knowledge' things that we are pretty much the only country that treats it as a joke.

If we finish above Spurs I'd be quite happy. Never won it before and it's a chance to get some of the younger players experience.

Plus it's harder to do now the CL alternates too, to maximise TV audiences and ad revenue.

It really needs making a proper cup competition again. The latter stages are fine, it's the dull groups that fuck teams over. Schlepping to Eastern Europe every other Thursday is what costs teams.

The reality of the EL is that it guarantees a high number of Thursday night games in far Eastern European countries, which are an absolute pain in the arse.

iI's all very well saying play the B side, but at some point you will have tos tart to take the competition more seriously (around the point you realise you could actually win it), and that's usually the same point where players are starting to get fatigued and injured.

Then you inevitably gets knocked out by a properly good side who fell out the CL, and meanwhile you've been overtaken in the league. Your squad is knackered, fourth isn't going to happen, and you've nothing to show for your season.

This is the story of every season since we've qualified for the EL. The last season we didn't qualify we ended up in the CL.

Good luck to any team that thinks it's worth a go, but I'm sick of it.

I'd rather see the Champions League shrunk to just the League and Domestic Cup champions, thus giving the competitions name some meaning, with the Europa League being for everyone else. It'd never happen because UEFA and FIFA love money baths but that's what I'd like :)

Teams parachuting out of the champions into it was the final nail in the coffin for me.

Should never have changed from the straightforward knockout format.
