Gibbs red rescinded, and no red for Ox.

The reason will be that the ball was actually going wide and therefore no goal-scoring opportunity was prevented. This is yet another example of the attempts to make football consistent, turning the rules into a nonsense.

A red card should be for poor sporting behaviour. That a player can put in a perfectly honest tackle, but be sent off for simply timing it poorly, yet Ox doesn't get a red for fully intending to prevent a goal with his hand is astonishing. They have to look at these rules and bring context and referee discretion back into play.
Aye, I expected it to stand, he handled it deliberately as he thought I was going in. That it wasn't should be irrelevant. But I'm not sure it's down to trying to be consistent. It's more that there isn't a rule to allow the ref to take that sort of action in that situation (as you say, common sense and context). A bad tackle does allow that to some degree though.... The ref has to decide whether it was mistimed, or dangerous
It's the dangerous ones that get the reds.

    Hah, great typo :D

Does make me wonder what's going on on the Arsenal forums for Dougs to have that stored as predictive text... o_0

The sport's rules, drawn up by world governing body Fifa, state that while a player should be booked for deliberately handling the ball, a red card should only be shown for "the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored".

They make no mention of a player's intent when handling the ball.
With that in mind, I think I agree with the outcome here. Obviously the handball didn't actually prevent a goal being scored (even if Oxlade-Chamberlain handled it because he thought it would), and so I guess a red card wouldn't be warranted.

I must admit I was under the impression that a player deliberately handling a ball like that was a red card offence, but apparently not.

But all handballs given are deemed to be deliberate...

Well if it's not an automatic red card I am surprised we don't see it more often, if the balls likely to go in the net one might as well dive and handball it if it prevents a goal without real any consequences.

@RightBean If it does prevent a goal, then it's an automatic red card. But in this case it was clearly going wide. This video here shows the best angle:

Bit that's what they're saying.... It was going wide, therefore no goalscoring opportunity

First time I'm seeing it. That is an absolute top class save. Seaman would have been proud of that.

Despite all the arguments I think we can all agree that this weekend the Ox has guaranteed his place on the plane to Brazil as 3rd goalie.

You are assuming they really care enough. And if the those that do, /cough Cleverley, they're so poor it can't do any harm.

    I miss Benny :-(

Was a bit of a liability at times but a better player than Rose is at the moment.

I'm mystified why BAE isn't in the side any more (though I don't see all Spurs' games by a long way) - he struck me as a good solid player who offered something going forward too.

Watch The Ox's desperate attempt, I think he was going for it with his head and misjudged. Desperation on the spur of the moment rather than cynical cheating.

Ooooh, some big games tonight... Horwich Murderers away being the biggest, obviously. \o/

Ideally, City spank United back to the stoneage and Swansea do the same to Arsenal.

They are so lucky to have a shit side to bully after getting humped by chelsea.

Well he isn't in the side because he's at QPR on loan, but that was still a mystifying decision.

We sent him out on loan to QPR for some strange reason (maybe he wanted to go?). Must something going on considering our lack of options at left back.

He's a decent full back, albeit prone to the odd crazy moment.
