I'm very impressed with Mata as a person after reading that letter, it came across sincere, heartfelt and professional. He was even nice enough to give Mourinho a backhanded compliment on top of the implicit critisism.

Now he's experienced the new difficult situation of being benched I'm sure he's raring to get going on experiencing the new difficult situation of playing in a mid table side with Chris Smalling and Tom Cleverly.

Mata really is a top class bloke, let alone top class player. I'm gutted he's left but I'm also happy for him that he gets to go somewhere he wants to play and we didn't force him abroad so I still get to see him play.

Don't think I can still follow him on twitter anymore though!

It's a real surprise that you sold him to Utd, but also that they've bought him given their protestations that an AM wasn't what Utd were after. Good summary in the guardian.

Just to make you all feel really old Cantona's kung fu kick was 20 years ago.

Is it supposed to be like this?

Just buy success with borrowed money!! Why doesn't every other club think of that?

I'm never sure if people are messing or not when they talk as if the Glazers buying us and loading their debt onto the club is a good thing..

Quite odd considering we make shit loads of money, can't really be likened to city, Chelsea et al. We only dropped out of the top three revenue earning clubs this year as a number of our recent sponsorship deals won't come into play until next year.

We're on target to be back up there next year from what I hear. I guess it will be worrying for other teams vying for cl places if we start spending money in line with what the club earns.

Plus Bayern won literally everything, so we'll easily be back up there.

Can't wait to see what we're like when the debt is gone.

Wait, so a top player joining United hurts more than one of your best players in the last decade joining a rival? Bloody hell..

The small time mentality is back now that pipe dream of winning the league they had around Christmas has disappeared.

Indeed. Such things can happen when your face looks like Paul Ince.

Table of big money transfers adjusted for inflation based on average transfer values and transfer records:

The article explaining how it's worked out is here. It's on a Liverpool blog but it's based on cold hard numbers.

If you use their maths but go backwards Ozil would have been a 15m transfer in 2003. A 10m striker bought last summer would be equivalent to a 3.5m striker ten years before that. It's an incredible rate of inflation, 20m won't be a big transfer in a few years time.

It depends how you define big, you can easily say big is a larger amount than 20m ..but still only 6 teams in the league have broken the 20m barrier.

It's not a big amount if Man City/Chelsea spend it (or if you waste it on Soldado) but it's not like we're at the stage where Cardiff and Stoke are spending that type of money on mid table plodders yet.

Forgot Rio went for as much as 30m. I wonder if there's a combined total transfer history leaderboard somewhere. I'd imagine he'd be in the top 3.

    Spot on. All about context.

Very, very few clubs can and will spend that sort of money.

I support a club for instance who've spent more than 10m once in the last 7 years (on Coloccini). Spending 20m (or even 17m like we did on Owen - outbidding Liverpool) under Ashley is the stuff dreams are made of. I.e. it'll never happen, and if it does it's because we've we're replacing someone we've sold for silly money.

Basically, clubs with ambition x lots of money see 20m as not a unrealistic sum of cash to spend on a worthy player.
