Agree with both those bits. They should start with the World Cup, where players get away with cheating on the biggest stage, proving to all that cheating is Ok as long as you do it well.

Mourinho's most recent comments were good - saying Blatter should tour all the cheaty countries and warn them on the subject. Shame he wasn't so honest about Eto'o's off-the-ball on Suarez, but honesty is never on the table wrt Chelsea-Liverpool.

Would've been a massive deal if it happened the other end and it was United who benefited. People would've bitched then about how we get all the decisions.

Anyway, hopefully will even out over the course of the season. Was Welbeck's one a dive? Only saw it the once and thought he might've been clipped but wasn't sure.

I was listening on 5live and they described the Welbeck one as a nailed on dive. MotD were a bit kinder but then they don't like to call out England players on diving.

Not sure why such a big deal is being made about that 'pen'.

Yes it probably was a pen, even Sherwood admitted as much. But it wasn't given and you lost. You shouldn't have to rely on those decisions to get you points. It's not like you Utd haven't benefited from iffy decisions before.

Now that Mendes goal on the other hand.....

I think Welshit was ever so slightly clipped and he fell down. Would have been soft IMO.

Anyone remember what Dani Osvaldo did against Newcastle? Whatever it was, he's just got a 3(!) game ban for it.

Yeah, reckon Welbeck's was a penalty too, but difficult for the ref to call it.

Imperfections are part of the game. Eradicate as much of it as humanly possible, and we'll have nothing to argue about. Getting angry about shit decisions against your team, that's where the juice is at.

For the Welbeck claim play should have been stopped by Webb in the buildup for the Rose head injury. Minimal contact as well, Bale got kicked over far worse than that and never got a single pen last year.

Nobody seems to know what he did, it was something in the touchline mele. Bloody annoying that we appealed it as he's been injured for the last three games anyway.

Can we all agree that Webb's turned into a shite ref since he became scared of making big calls since he was given the WC final a few years ago? Unbelievable bottler these days.

Funny but apt that they used a picture from another time Clattenburg screwed us over.

Couldn't even tell you who the best ref is these days, they all seem pretty bad.

Yep, and I know there's the whole 'over-analysis / benefit of replay / they're only human etc.' argument but not a weekend goes by these days where there isn't at least one match with a poor refereeing decision that has a big say on the result. Not sure there's a solution either. Wonder will Sian Massey get a game soon..

Webb has had a couple of bad games but I dont think that necessarily makes him a bad ref. Everyone has a few bad days at the office and I think he will come good again.

I don't know why they don't just bring in video replays like they do in rugby. I don't blame refs when you have so many tough calls and diving cheating players around them. It's simply not possibly to catch everything on the field.

I don't think it would slow down play that much. When a bad call is made, the amount of complaining the players etc do slows the game down anyway. Also, if the players know there actions can have consequences, they surely wouldn't risk it.

Just make it something like teams can only call for video replays 2 times a game or something.

Last few United games he's reffed he's been shocking. Wouldn't be surprised if he's subconsciously weary of giving decisions to us after the whole Ryan Babel tweet incident. Has to play on anyone's mind.

Also can some ref please give a penalty against Skrtl some game in the near future. Gets away with absolute murder every weekend and needs to be cut out. Worse than John Terry at his worst.

With regard to this, premiership refs, apparently get in the high 90s for percentage of correct decisions and 99% of offside decisions correct.

Its probably safe to say that we not only have the best football refs in the world but possibly the best officials of any sport.

They get a lot of unjustified shit.

Webb is a coward who refuses to make the biggest calls because he knows a wrong decision that punishes someone directly is remembered way longer than failing to see something or being too lenient.

The FA won't do anything about it because he's their big man at international tournaments and if they punish him his status would be hurt.

And to add a little bit of balance to that request, any card for hacking Suarez down at any given opportunity. The game is football, not let's fuck up the best player in the EPL.

He gave some decisions against Utd? It's amazing he's still allowed to ref at all!

Cause that's exactly the point I was making.

While were on the subject of refs, Rodgers has been charged for his comments after the City game. Was more the linesman he had a right to be aggrieved with but the lack of accountability for officials is shocking.

I honestly think the best thing would be to just stop focusing so much on decisions and get on with things a bit more. Video replays will just result in even more navel gazing. Refs are better trained, equipped and prepared than ever before, and yet the better they are, the more we expect of them. I just long for the days when everyone talked about football more than refs after games. You'd think the Young penalty was the deciding factor in that game, but if United could have managed more than half a dozen shots on target it would have been a minor incident.

The lack of accountability is because refs are assumed to be doing the best job they can, in a fast-paced league, without any video support, and also be impartial and thick-skinned. That is what protects them.
