It would be a better system than the current yawnsome pointlessness.

The "downside" of not playing out of league friendlies would mean that world cups and European cups get much more like real events again. I like it.

I think england could sit comfortably in the middle of d2. Like the idea though. Int friendlies are boring. Be much better if there was something at stake.

You'll get even more players pulling out with 'injury' if that idea is implemented.

Good, they can do it a few times, get dropped by the manager and be known as the piss stain they are :-)

Then we'll end up with a team full of Lallanas. Nobody wants to watch that.

Cos we'd all rather watch a bunch of prima donnas who dont really want to be there?

Personally I'd much rather watch 'poorer' players who actually want to play than 'better' players who dont give a shit.

How do you know football players' inner thoughts?

I don't doubt the loyalty of most of them. Some of them perhaps just aren't as good as the press make them out to be, and that translates to them looking like they care less on the international stage.

Perhaps, but for whatever reason (lack of interest, club rivalries, them generally being arseholes (terry)), they don't perform at international level. What I'm saying is I wouldn't mind seeing some others given a chance.

You all have a massively skewed vision of how good England are(or aren't in your eyes).

As an outsider; you win most of your games, mostly qualify for every tournament(barring a massive upset) and while you should have done better in the tournaments recently, you would challenge in that top division. No question.

I'd quite like to watch that, but one of them has to have the first name Banana.

Something like this might actually help us. We seem to freeze when we meet any of those countries in the first group competitively, so regular games in a vaguely competitive environment can only help when we get to the tournaments. The downside will be that in tournaments, the big games won't be so special or unique any more (unless we get busted down to Div 2 quick smart)

If they were clever, they would also mix it in with euro qualification.

Something like the top two divisions qualify automatically and the winner of each other league plays each other.

How the flying fuck are we in division 1 and France in 2? That's just plain wrong.

    Great idea though.

My favourite ever idea for a Viz comic strip... Hugo Viana and his Enormous Banana... could equally be applied to Adam Lallana (except Viana would've been better as he played for Newcastle).

In my current game of Footie Manager Newcastle (in 2022) have a midfielder called Yaya Banana

Not quite sure why you are so obsessed with him all of a sudden. I only suggested that he would be in the squad before long and that half our problems arise from having to fit Lampard and Gerrard into the same team.

I don't think it's a massive stretch to assume that we will improve significantly when those two aren't the first names on the team sheet.

    Classic Joe Kinnear signing.

I think we'll fondly look back on the days when we had quality like Gerrard and Lampard tbh.

    Only joking.

The problem is that, after nearly 15 years, 'how do you play them both in the same team?' has tainted both their england careers.

But, yeah, what you wouldnt give for a FM style regen for frank lampard.

I can just imagine someone sat watching an England game with their son regaling him with stories of how rather than a ten yard pass to a man in space our old legend Steven Gerrard would have done a spectacular hollywood ball right into touch.

Having sat and watched international games with my dad for nigh on 30 years, I can confirm that you complain exactly the same amount about england the whole way through your life.
