is 86 million not "anywhere near"? It's 86% of 100m.
Well, there is as of yet no official bid of any amount for him.

You do have to wonder what our "special relationship" Madrid is about. I'd have really thought it would mean all of this shit didn't happen.

Has there been any official word that stops that being anything but a load of made up bollocks?

That said, I still think if he goes this window, it'll be really silly money. Can see it being a world record quite easily. Transfers in Spain are political, and with Barca getting Neymar, Madrid are under a pressure to make a massive signing. And Perez has already said Bale is the one, and has had Zidane putting word out to the Spanish press that he's the best thing since sliced bread all season. And then there's the Levy factor.

Again, I think it'll be 100m, or close to it. It'll be more than Ronaldo. This figure of 85m that Marca keeps coming out with isn't out of thin air. They are effectively an agency of Madrid. That number is being put out to see what the reaction to it is.

I do wonder why they didn't hold on to Higuain to part exchange as that would have been ideal for both clubs. I guess there may have been no interest from the player.

You are a factory of sadness.

I can see how Spurs would get a bit more because of the Levy factor, but 80m+? Ronaldo was easily worth that much because he was a genuinely global marketable brand, as well as being consistently great over a number of seasons in both the domestic league and CL, almost single-handedly winning trophies for Man Utd, not to mention strong performances in international tournaments. None of which can be said about Bale.

As much as I think we cannot refuse that sort of money, I wonder what the overall effect will be on squad morale. If reports are to be believed, paulinho was given assurances bale would stay before he signed. Avb said he was too.

Could potentially have a significant knock on effect.

    But 86m.... fucking hell

It's funny how if you type Bales name into google it shows a picture of that other spurs player who looks the same.

The 86 million amount could possibly being fed to the media from Spurs because that's closer to what they want then what RM are actually offering at the moment, like how Man Utd put out that Chelsea were offering money plus mata/luiz for Rooney.

It just doesn't work that way. The value of players is not quantified like that.

I agree he's probably not worth 80m or whatever, but I do believe that may well be what it'll cost to get him, and knowing Madrid, they may well pay it.

@Kay I do believe that bale is a household name now, at least in europe. I'm sure he would sell shirts and help madrid to a trophy or too. He is the marquee signing that they are looking for as someone mentioned a few posts back.

I also dont ever remember Ronaldo setting any intl tournaments alight. And bale is welsh so prob wont get the chance. Can't hold that against him. Giggs is/was world class and he has never had a chance to shine on the international stage.

Transfer fees really have gone mental recently. It's just getting fucking stupid now.

Madrid know failure to sign Bale would damage their reputation for 'getting their man' - IMO they'll pay anything to avoid that off the back of Barca signing Neymar. Bale is the only 'available' player who could possibly be seen as a bigger signing. Spurs are in a fabulous position.

To be honest, it's just Madrid, and always has been. Ten years ago they paid over 50m for Zidane, and that was the highest for nearly a decade, until they bought Kaka and Ronaldo. And now they'll pay a stupid amount for Bale.

Nobody else really deals in that bracket.

Bale is too ugly to be a global product like Ronaldo.

Don't think it matters with that cash. As Crouch said.

That said, imagine how much faster he could go.

Also just a quick point to those who say he has had one good season... I refer you back to page 1 post 1 of this thread. He has been good for a few years now.

Although clearly this season was his standout one...

    Pretty significant difference.

    http://i3.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article1168381.ece/ALTERNATES/s2197/gareth%20bale%20ears-1168381.jpg

Not sure if this is a serious point or not, but just in case it is, it's clearly not something that makes a difference to player value, or even their marketability. The likes of Ronaldino, Ribery and the original Rolando are proof of that. Even Messi is not dramatically better looking than Bale.

He won't be a Calvin Klein model any time soon, but that makes no odds to the club.

Anyway, without wishing to jump the gun (as it is so easy to do with Spurs), it really is sounding an awful lot like we've signed Soldado. Pretty much every Spanish paper has it as done, and there's various semi-official Valencia sources talking about the sale and how the money will be spent, so it's looking good.

Even if Bale does go, I'd be reasonably confident with what we have now.

Kay talked about genuine global brands. Of course the football is priority, but he won't be sold to a female fanbase like Ronaldo and Beckham. Doesn't make any difference to what is on the pitch tho.
