There's not really much point in having two world class keepers though. They don't get tired like outfield players and they tend not to get injured anywhere near as much as well.

Improve or stagnate. Show promise or see your best talent get pissed off with empty promises and leave. Buy someone good with the increased telly money, make the squad and the fans happy, make your stars feel less complacent and less inclined to agitate for a move.

Spurs and Arsenal probably can't win the league against the marketing muscle of Man Utd and the bottomless pockets of Chelsea and City, but that's not the same as definitely. Spurs have already improved steadily from where they were a few years ago.

Yeah GKs weren't really what I had in mind (never mind the furore when one is swapped for a game if they aren't injured), but the idea of having a first 11 that can't be touched unless for injury or suspension is just plain weird.

Yes, Spurs were nowhere near their plateau a few years ago. They're much nearer now.

I'm not saying don't improve. I'm explaining why Spurs and Arsenal are so risk averse.

And I agree with you 100%, but Arsenal in particular should really buy someone this summer. They're not short of cash and they can afford a really expensive not-quite-a-flop-but-a-bit-of-a-disappointment, a Reyes for our times if you will. They're giving the impression that they're pretending to try to spend money at the moment, as if the whole trasnfer window is one big passive agressive huff at the transfer market and their fans.
Just overspend for once to show you can.

To be fair to them though, Cazorla was an excellent bit of business and a lot of people seem to forget they got him recently. Just because he was a bit of a bargain doesn't mean he wasn't also an excellent signing; he's a proper big ticket player.

@President_Weasel Our problem isn't about going out to spend a load on a marquee signing but more about about signing a few players that can do a different job to the ones we already have. The players we need are pretty specific. I'm happy if we get one or two more signings in. Even if we don't buy a striker, I don't think it's our top priority.

Goal are saying Arsenal have made a new bid for Suarez - 35m up front plus 7m add-ons. Decent Liverpool ITK confirmed it also.

Goal are pretty much the worst football news site going other than tribal football.

The only thing reliable about them is their unreliablity

Eh? I specifically used an example of a club that did it just 2 years ago, when Montpellier did it over PSG, Marseille and Lyon.

And I used the 08 squad as a squad written off to not even make it into the top 4 after losing arguably its best player of all time in Henry, against United and peak rich Chelsea. Sure that's just 2 teams, but that's 1 team less than today (City).

As such, it does prove s lot to back my point, especially the case of Montpellier.

Edit: Wolfsburg also did it against Bayern, who dominate the rest of the league by a fair margin, and Dortmund, who admittedly weren't the force now as they were then.

If my point that it is not impossible to win the league without spending oodles of cash is wrong, then well....

Andre Villas-Boas says he is counting on Gareth Bale to stay at Tottenham, amid reports in Spain that he is set to join Real Madrid.

So it's not impossible for Spurs or Arsenal to win the league, but it is impossible for them to become the best teams in the league longterm. Any success they may have will be very fortuitous, and extremely short-lived.
Which in fairness, was exactly the point I was making.
You don't need to spend huge sums of cash to win the league at any given season, but will need to do so to stay a dominant force.

    Exactly what I was saying.

Goal post a lot of rumours, but I actually like the site as it's good for keeping up to date with other European leagues.

It's a very international site (talking about the English international version here), to its credit.

    Pretty much bang on.
In regards to Santi, he was a great deal, but its often forgotten that he was targeted the season before but we weren't willing to pay the fee, so we came back and got him at an exceptional price due to an exceptional circumstance.

We gambled on getting 4th and only through sheer luck and Harry we did on the last day.

Something to do with how Italian TV money is shared between the Italian sides. Last season there were only two teams competing when there is usually 3 or 4 so they each got a bigger slice

Goal is good during the season.
Its their transfer rumours that's pretty shocking. Tribal football-esque I would call it.

That Wayne V something is the worst. I remember some ITK just making sn opinion tweet this week that if arsenal we're to make an offer for Suarez, maybe they're waiting for him to return on holiday.
Within a minute, Wayne (who follows him) posted an "exclusive" of arsenal waiting for Suarez to return from holiday.

I had to call him out on that, as it was so brazen.

Ah right, cheers. That still seems a bit barmy that despite only having a competitors, they get the same as other leagues? What about the proper smaller nations, they must be laughing!

Tbh, I think this whole announcing that we have loads of money to spend was a massive PR own goal.

We should have just kept it normal, looking to add one or two astute signings to the squad in areas where we need reinforcement, but nothing major.

They've driven the fans into a frenzy for no reason, backed themselves into a corner where if they don't overspend on a player they will look stupid, and left themselves with no option but to sign Suarez because there is no one else willing to come.

Just shut your mouths next time.

Everyone knew how much cash we have to invest. It's publicly available information and Gazidis being so blatant was for the benefit of one man only.

The councillor guy makes a valid point, but Wonga are still a far, far, worse shower of cunts than Northern Rock or a casino.
