Sounds as though the winners of the European League will be given a Champions League qualifying place in a couple of seasons. An interesting move which muddies the qualification criteria further.

Long overdue to be honest. Ive thought for years that they should do that, it really will make the competition more attractive.

I guess there are potential problems there though such as what if the winners have already qualified automatically through the league? Runners-up? What if its the same for them?

It could mean the horrific thought of the fifth placed team in a particular league earning a place that way.

Its basically a pussies way out because they dont want to reduce the number of games.

It also, potentially, gives us five CL places if spurs ever get their fingers out.

Meh, can't see that happening at all. I doubt AVB will go anywhere, he is clearly building something at Spurs and the EPL is looking quite open next year.

You are a factory of sadness.

Napoli have less ambition than Spurs to my mind.

Napoli finished second in the league and have a CL place. Arguably a better project than spurs.

Napoli also have an absolutely batshit crazy owner. If Rafa coped well enough with Abramovich then he might be able to handle Napoli, but the way AVB found it would probably put him off.

Good prospect though, aside from losing Cavani this summer.

Didn't know that tbh. Italian football bores the arse off me. Elitist ignorance ftw!

Yeah, if not for his Chelsea Saga, I would say Napoli had a chance. But not now.

All winnings should be more evenly distributed. Certainly TV rights.

Why would AVB go anywhere? He's got a good chairman, a new stadium on the way and money coming in. It's a great job.

So Pardew is definitely staying then

Dreadful news. Really wish Llambias and Ashley were football men who know about the game.

I respect Pardew for the good things he's done but the mistakes he made this season were too plentiful and I don't think he'll learn from them any time soon. Nor will he ever change his style of football.

Too defensive, we've scored more than 3 in 4 games in his entire reign as manager (over 2 and a half seasons), of which one involved a game going to extra time, another would have ended 3-2 if not for a Southampton own goal, another was the Arsenal 4-4 and the other one is the only time Pardew's Newcastle have thrashed a team - 5-0 against West Ham early on in his NUFC career.

I imagine things won't have improved much going into next season, and he'll be under serious pressure after a few games.

I totally support the decision. With a full pre- season hopefully he can get the team settled now, starting with sorting out Colo's future.

Yeah I agree. Sacking him would be a stupid move.

It doesn't make any sense to sack him now, we were bad last year but now we've survived I think we should give him a chance to turn it around next season. I think it sends out a better message than getting rid after one disappointing season.

He had a brilliant first season, he had a shocking second season, he deserves a season to find out which one was the fluke. Somewhere between 16th and 5th is about right for Newcastle.

The Porto president has been speaking on Portuguese TV about Pereira (said Porto have offered him a new contract, but also claimed Everton have offered him one too), how shit he thinks A Bola are, and interestingly the structure of the sale of James Rodriguez and Moutinho to Monaco.

The deal for the two players is worth about 70m combined, but because there's a 25% sell on clause to Sporting in Moutinho's contract, Porto have only charged Monaco 1m for him and the rest is for Rodriguez :)

On the Europa / CL stuff, I agree with the sentiment which has often been echoed around here that if anything Europa should be totally decoupled from the CL, rather than integrated further.

That CL failures drop into the contest is a farce. The idea that the winner of the Europa is basically told that the cup they've just won is not worth defending and they get into another contest is also a farce.

    Very silly.

As for AvB, I don't see why he'd go at the moment. He's making all the right noises about staying for a long time at Spurs and I really hope he does.

I suggest the people that are backing Pardew to the hilt should sit down and look at some detailed analysis of how we have played this season. Better yet get yourself the end of season DVD. And some popcorn.

Also saying it's stupid to sack him now, and yet what will likely happen is he will plod along until October when we will be 18th, out of the League Cup and then he'll be sacked. And then there will be even less people available to replace him than there are now.
