After a couple of matches elements of the press were raving about the Di Canio Effect - will it turn out to have just been the dead cat bounce all along?
Maybe Short should get another manager in - another couple of games of dead cat bounce could actually save their season.

Hah, 11 goals and have gone up a place on goal difference.

Bit of a weird ones for newcastle fans. Seeing sunderland get humped: good. Seeing sunderland get humped and possibly send you down because of it: bad.

It's looking really bad for Wigan now.

Well that was unexpected, although saying that we have three strikers who are all in good form and know where the goal is. It just happened to all come together tonight, thanks in part to Sunderland's poor defending but some of the play around the box was incisive and the right decisions were made at critical moments.

Lowton was simply brilliant this evening, he dominated the right side and his timing of interceptions was fantastic. Mix that with Sylla and Weimann on the right and they barely had anything down that side.

What can I say about Benteke too, he was not dominating the defence as he has done but he was in the right place at the right time and deadly. I feel like playing with Bent in training might well have helped him hone this aspect.

I have to say, the whole team played excellently this evening, one or two silly moments but it's been a long time since I've seen Villa passing the ball around for five minutes while goals to the good. Lambert got it all right tonight.

That red card was probably harsh but he was on a yellow anyway and it was definitely a booking at the very least.

    So happy right now.

You are a factory of sadness.

Oh and Westwood was absolute class. I can see Man Utd coming in for him when Carrick drops off.

3 matches without Sessegnon now off the back of a 6-1 humping.

Its quite telling that benteke has had the best season a villa striker has ever had and you are still flirting with relegation.

You have taken some proper drubbings this year.

Sunderland are right back in trouble now too though to be fair.

I think things be a lot, lot clearer by next Tuesday. Wigan will have played twice by then. Norwich, Villa, Newcastle and Sunderland can all get to 40 points (41 in Norwich's case) over the weekend. All play in absolutely must win games.

Was going to say this. He does the simple things well and links play perfectly. Delph looked good too.

Apparently they haven't won on a Monday night for over ten years.
And long may it continue as Sunderland play Stoke next Monday night. :)

Swansea and West Brom are coasting to the end of the season so Wigan have a real chance of six points from their next two games.

Newcastle should take points from West Ham and QPR but then they should of taken points from a bunch of games they played shite in this year.

Sunderland are at home to Stoke and Southampton, I think they draw with Stoke and get reamed by the Saints.

I can see Sunderland and Newcastle needing wins and looking at goal difference on the last day of the season to see who stays up.

Looking at Wigan's fixture list, after this Sunday they won't have a rest of more than 3 days thanks to having to catch up a league game and playing the FA Cup final. Fingers crossed that won't help their chances - I could really do with them failing to win their next 3 games :/

"interestingly" (your results may vary) Di Canio and Lambert both played for Celtic back in the ONeill era. I think Lambert left* just before di Canio turned up though. Di Canio was only there a season or two, using the club as a shop window to get a premiership place. Lambert was an excellent servant to the club and still has a good relationship with Martin O'Neill (still refers to him as 'the gaffer', even).
I suspect he might have got a bit of satisfaction from gubbing Di Canio, over and above 3 points and a solid chunk of goal difference.

I have a lot of time for Paul Lambert, I hope like hell he keeps Villa up.

*to go and win the Champion's League with Dortmund.

Paul Lambert would murder your grandmtoher and rape your babies if he thought it would get him a promotion. He's one of the most intensely ambitious people I've ever met.

He is only in for it at Villa until he gets a better offer.

That's what I said weeks ago!

They aren't going to turn around and win 3 games out of 4 to stay up which is essentially the minimum they need now.
