There's no real pre-WC ranking system though. During the Brazil Italy friendly last night I'm sure they said Brazil were ranked something daft like 18th. The rankings goes bananas after each inter-continent tournament.

@kentmonkey Can we get the Irons on a Gooner's driveway...? Yes we can!

They dont have any chance at all, thats the point. They have literally no chance in the current system. If they were grouped together with a pool of other losers, they may have a shot at doing something.

To put it into context, Paddy Power have San Marino to beat us 1-0 at LONGER odds than us finding intelligent life in the universe within the next year.

@nickthegun But then the lower smaller teams would never have the chance to play the bigger teams. At least they get to have matches with the star names even if it's unlikely they'll ever qualify.

But then you're talking about putting them through to the WC finals, taking up a place from a team that could potentially do something, just to bring about the same issue that was being had in the qualifiers.

Im not. They would still stand no chance against the likes of sweden, belgium and denmark but at least they wont get humped 13-0 by the likes of germany again.

The PL should just let the biggest four clubs go into the CL every year. Fuck the smaller clubs.

Kick Derby County out of the FA Cup. They don't stand a chance of winning it anyway. Put them in the Autoglass Trophy where they stand a chance instead. Also, kick them out of the Football League entirely. They never stand a chance of winning the Premiership, so fuck 'em.

Should just give the title to City every year once they get a decent manager in.

Oh wait, that's real life isn't it.

Obviously, considering the teams who have got to our cup finals this year, thats pure, weapons grade idiocy.

You know why? Our leagues are COMPETITIVE. There isnt a professional team in the country that, for example, Manchester United would consider a 4-0 win a bad result against.

Lol. I love how England are part of 'Europe's elite' all of a sudden. If we did get a properly regulated ranking system in place with the top 10 teams getting automatic spots, England would be nowhere near it and would still be having to qualify against San Marino.

Yes we would. We win far more than we lose.

@nickthegun What a ridiculous thing to say. Given England failed to qualify for the last but one tournament, and of the last five world cup's we failed to qualify for one and squeaked through to another in the dying seconds, we hardly have a right to say other teams aren't worthy of a place.

A few weeks ago the term 'flat track bullies' was used in this thread. England are the very definition of this. Their 'Official FIFA Ranking' is nothing short of a joke.

Am I to assume the use of 'their' implies some kind of predisposition to take this, frankly, twattish stance?

Solid, England DO win most of their games. Their just shit in tournaments. Go look up the stats.

In fact for a country of our population we actually over achieve.

Fact from why England lose :)

It isn't a twattish stance. It's being bluntly honest. England are also-rans in international football.

Anyway, im off now so just to clarify:

    1) These games are pointless

    2) I would be in favour of a seeding system that lets the fifa top ten avoid having to fuck around with them

    3) England are good enough to be counted among the top ten teams in the world regardless of how you weight it

Which was my point. Thank you for making it.

Bradford, League 2, should have been pumped by lots of teams playing them. Got through.

Bradford, in terms of their ability to Arsenal, let's say, is probably the equivalent of a team ranked 100 or lower in the World Rankings playing England. But under your proposal, that's not worthy of happening. Our League 2 is not competitive when stacked up against the PL. It's just not. But sometimes teams, deploying the right tactics or taking advantage of poor from on the other side, or a weakened side being picked, squeak through.

You do realise who is in the Top 10 don't you. And who isn't. They're by no means the best 10 teams in the world. And that Sweden were in the Top 10 a little while ago, as were Denmark I believe. Which are teams you're now saying should be playing against San Marino.

For somebody that is now professing they aren't saying we should do this, you've been very defensive about it over the past page or so.

It's an arrogant attitude that because a team isn't very good, why should they not play against a decent side. For the San Marino team tonight, they'll be pleased to be playing against some of the games best known players. They'll learn from it. As other national sides have. And probably become better because of it. We'll be pleased because we get to try a few different players out and to try out some tactical tweaks.

If these shit national sides didn't get to play the best teams around before the WC finals, they wouldn't learn anything en-route. They would never improve. This provides them with the opportunity to improve, whilst also benefiting from the enjoyment of playing in big games.

Your point also seems to scattergun around the more you're challenged on it. As does your ability to not post aggressively, just because people aren't agreeing.

"Im not saying we should do this, by the way. Im just saying this evenings match and others like it are absolutely fucking pointless. "

And then "I would be in favour of a seeding system that lets the fifa top ten avoid having to fuck around with them".

We're statistically the 9th most successful side in the history of international football. I'd say that just about makes us part of the elite.
