Just read a rumour that Kindle Fire is due here in January as well, so as tempting as it is think I will wait until after Christmas.

Good result there Nasty...think I might buy the 70b for myself in the new year then.

As for the Kindle Fire, have you read the reviews on it? Browsing is apparently not that good.

Looks like January could be a great month for budget tablets.

If you're reading Revenge (Matty to non XBLA friends), best to hold out till then.

The idea of a "70" running Honeycomb and a higher res, and hopefully only a tad higher in price is very appealing. The Kindle Fire could also be worth the wait - saw a program on Bloomberg recently where they dissected the Fire and costed all the components. Basically, Amazon ARE selling it at a loss so if/when someone gets a custom ROM on it, I reckon you'll have a quality budget tab right there.

Maybe not "budget" for some but Curry's are now selling the Blackberry Playbook for 169. Apparently CPW are price matching too.

It's a solid bit of kit and although it's running the QNX OS which is pretty good, you can access Android apps as well.

Get the Playbook rather - only 169 and it's Dual Core - the Flyer is not.

Ok, so I got the Archos 70 for Xmas and have a noobie sort of question - one of my other presents was the first series of Breaking Bad on DVD, so how do I get those DVDs onto the Archos?

Back in the day with an older archos media player I used a programme called "fair use wizard" but it was a bit slow. Has this sort of thing moved on at all recently?

    Thanks

Depending on your moral stance Carbon, you could just download them. I've had success with AVI files on my 70. Failing that, you'll be googling for dvd backup software.

Wouldn't worry mate, I reckon quite a few tablets are gonna come down in price esp with the release of the Kindle Fire. We've already seen drops in the BB Playbook, HTC Flyer, and the Xoom over the weekend. Not sub-100 levels yet but edging closer.

Really getting on great with my 70 so far. Got golauncher installed and the machine flies through screen transitions even with the cool looking 3D flip effect going. I'm sure i'll be looking on enviously when the kindle fire makes it to these shores but for now im a very happy customer. Thanks whoever it was that highlighted it in here! (Sport?)

Depends which device you're talking about, and what you want to emulate. mrpon has managed to emulate most of the retro stuff on the Archos - GBA, SNES etc with the use of a wiimote as a controller. Works great AFAIK.

So I fancy treating myself to a tablet.

The Archos has had good reviews on here but reading about it elsewhere seems a bit mixed. I'm also not sure if 7" is enough for me.

I'd like to spend less than 150 if possible, Wi-Fi an obvious must but 3G not so much.

It's going to be used primarily for reading and watching the Battlestar Galactica box set that I'm about to treat myself to.

    Any recommendations?

    Really? Nothing?

Come on you guys you're Eurogamer forumites, you can do better than this!

Well, you could get the 10" version of the Archos tablet. I've not seen that, but it has a bigger screen and is available where as the 7" seems to be unavailable at the moment.

I would think the Archos would be able to watch movies no problem and obviously can use kindle etc. All I can comment on is the two that I got my kids. They are very happy with them and use them all the time. I installed kindle for them and look at a movie that was on there (demo) and looked at some YouTube. Both looked really good and vibrant.

I would say that the unit feels a little heavier than something like a Kindle as its got a glass screen. However, its got a (fragile) stand which means you can set it on that when watching movies. Its also got HDMI output.

What is it that put you off it?

It's mostly the CNET review and the non capacitive screen.

All of the feedback left in that review is pretty attrocious.

The Archos 70 is definitely Capacitive. I think most people seem to refer to the Archos 7 (which is Resistive) or get the two mixed up. They're completely different machines but the naming convention Archos use leads to much confusion.

It's 100 ferg, you have to lower your expectations somewhat.

Netflix works without a hitch on it.

Marvin ZX Spectrum emulator hooked up to my TV.

I guess the stocks cleaned out ready for the updated model Archos 70b Internet Tablet which has a price of 170. But having had the 70 since Xmas I have had no major problems, a bit of a hardware boost would be welcome.

I recommend you wait a bit see what users think of this vs the Amazon Fire.

Yep I'm definitely getting my Archos's confused. CPW only seem to have the Home Tablet left, no sign of the IT anywhere for less than 100.

Might be worth spending that bit extra and going for the Archos 80 G9. More power and slightly bigger HD screen might be exactly what you're after. 199 from CPW.
