I think the list tried to include at least one thing from each genre, and the writer thought 'well, Axelay is in there, no room for Aleste, UN Squadron etc'. Not too sure about FF II/V either.

The SNES's game library and controller absolutely lay waste to the MD. Come on now, racers you got FZero and Mario, RPG wise - Chrono Trigger and FF6. Platformers? Not even worth disputing but you have the Mario World and DKC series - all time classics.

Now add on top the games for which the MD actually had no comparable offerings such as Super Metroid and Megaman X and the answer is pretty damn clear.

People can talk about style and which console was 'cooler' till they're blue in the face, but the SNES clearly had better games, therefore it was the better console.

    HUFF!

That list was actually pretty good. It missed Super Puyo Puyo
    though

MD was bigger in the UK though as it had like a 2 year? head start over the SNES? I remember reading about the SNES ages before it came out. I got one as soon as they did then sold it a year or so later and bought a US (purple) version for the 60Hz and still have it to this day with a handful of the best games.

Everybody has secrets, life would be boring without secrets, don't you think...?

Ah, I remember Super Puyo Puyo- another one that Super Play sold me, I think.

I liked the way the blobs linked up when the same colours were next to each other, that was a really nice mechanic, as was it being any four of the same colour, each adjacent to at least one other, in any shape. A really nice take on columns/tetris etc.

I've recently obtained a Sony CRT and unpacked my SNES and Megadrive and have them set up permanently in my spare room. Totally gorgeous.

If I had to pick, I'd go with the SNES, the games look great and many still stack up playability wise by today's standards. I've never really noticed the difference between PAL and NTSC before, but Sonic the Hedgehog is definitely much slower on a UK console. Even the music seems comically slow at times

Playing the NTSC Sonic after the PAL verson there quite a difference.. I think the speed the game ran at made the NTSC/PAL comparisons more obvious.

The same effect was there in 90% of games across all consoles..

Remember Starwing/StarFox on the SNES? Black borders all around (not just top and bottom, but sides as well) and a framerate that was probably 15fps.

Fucking Nintendo and their utter contempt for PAL, they're still like that these days too (to a degree, at least).

Possibly because I don't know any different, most of the SNES games seem okay speed wise. Although Streetfighter 2 does seem a bit slow. Would I be right?

I'd played Sonic 1 recently via XBLA and I am taking that to be the "correct" speed. UK MD version is noticeable slower.

I guess if you had nothing to compare to, you wouldnt know any better.

All 32bit and lower consoles are slower in PAL land. There where a few games optimised but borders still existed for those.

the best way to see for a bit of nostelga is run a game on an emulator and switch the region on the same rom, most will run at both speeds if you disable auto detect.. either that or run on a swichable console..
  • Deleted user 12 September 2011 14:14:08
If you're a speed freak you can try running PAL Mario Kart on and NTSC or switched console, it's insanely fast.

i think you would just get it running in its true speed... I remember at the time when magazines printed high scores, the times for the NTSC verson were always faster due to the 17.5% speed diference..

On the balance I like SNES better, but in terms of side scrolling action I'd take Rocket Knight Adventures or Chelnov over Mega Man X3 (the only MMX I've played) any day. Also, Contra: Hard Corps over Contra III: The Alien Wars, easily. Furthermore, MD's library of sidescrolling (Monster World IV) and top-down/isometric (Landstalker) action adventure games is stronger than people tend to give it credit for.
Among 16-bit jRPGs, in my book Shining Force is second only to Chrono Trigger.
I don't have much to say in MD shmups' defense, but very few SNES shmups came close to the excellence of Eliminate Down for the MD.
It's got nothing to do with coolness or Blast Processing™ (Wild Guns alone shows the latter middle finger). I just happen to play MD games about as frequently as SNES ones these days.
    P.S. Yay.

Not with mario kart as the PAL version is slightly optimised so a PAL cart in a 60hz machine runs much faster than any other version.

SNES was a better machine, but the Mega Drive holds dearest in my heart.

For me it would have to be the MegaDrive, after all it was my first console, i will never forget Christmas morning and being blown away by Sonic 1.

I used to own both. Sold the MD, still have the SNES (the US version, so no PAL conversion issues here ;-)). One MD game that I remember most fondly is MUSHA - that and Sonic were the games that sold it to me :-)

The SNES still occasionally gets dusted off because my kids want to play Mario All Stars...which reminds me that I still need to fix the SCART lead (wrong impedance on the RGB leading to a too bright image)

Got a shed load of wavey noise on mine, no idea how to fix it :(

Noise is usually interference or a poor lead/connection.
In case of SCART, open up the plug to check if the pins are still connected ok (SCART is the most useless-est connector EVER). If you've got a multi-meter, check the leads.

Nah, scart is fine as it works lovely on my N64.

Gotta be internal or my power supply :(

Could be the connector inside then. Depends how much (un)plugging it had to endure over the years (seen this on all sorts of equipment: laptops, monitors, my gamegear...)

Could be, no idea how long it was sitting in Super Potatoe for, but they do test all their machines.

I remeber at the time for me and my mates, it was which mortal kombat 1 and 2 played best on, snes just got it i think.

SNES what the better conversion, megadrive wasn't censored though, other than that you'd need to be blind and death not to give superiority to the SNES version.

    This.

Streets of Rage 2 is prolly in my top 3 games ever. The other 2? SF2 Turbo and SMW. Hmmm.

It was better than World Warrior if that's what you mean, but it's a different game.
