I have Sidonglobophobia which is basically a fear of touching cotton wool. Just the thought of touching the stuff brings me out in a cold sweat!

Has anyone else here got any phobias?

A fear of public speaking, "stage fright".

Interestingly, a large number of performers have stage fright - throwing up in the wings before going on stage etc - but they love what they do.

How weird is that? Physically throwing up before you do your job... imagine a uhh, supermarket worker throwing up and getting the shakes before every shift

DON'T THINK ABOUT TOUCHING COTTON WOOL! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT IMAGINE COTTON WOOL, AND ALL ITS HORRIBLE CURLY FIBRES AGAINST YOUR VULNERABLE NAKED SKIN, OR IN YOUR MOUTH, STUCK IN YOUR TEETH, LODGED IN YOUR THROAT. OH GOD THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE.

Yet they love their job as a lighthouse.

    People are weird.

I lurk. If I've spoken to you, I'm either impassioned, or drunk.

On a side-note, does anyone else get annoyed at the misuse of 'irrational' when it comes to phobias?

'I have an irrational fear of drowning'.

    Actually, that's pretty rational.

Balloons. Not me, but it made me chuckle when one of my weak chinned colleagues 'fessed up.

I have a horrible fear of high buildings, just being near them turns me to a nervous wreck. :( I've no idea why though.... I have an uncontrollable urge to look up at them, at which point my palms go sweaty and I just feel like running away....

In my more drinky days, I would occasionally have hangover horrors, the nuttiest of which was a fear that gravity would cease to be and that I would float into space.

    Unlikely.

Spiders. Only certain ones though, like house spiders or spiders with similar proportions e.g huntsmen etc.

I've held tarantulas but I have almost been sick with panic when I saw 2 house spiders at once in my flat. I actually had to cover my eyes because I was overwhelmed.

    'Sup, what's guanine?

Not a huge fan of spiders but i'm absolutely terrified of butterflies for some reason. Makes every hair on my body stand up.

Also, stuffed/skeletonised animals. Went to the Museum of Natural History in NYC a couple of months ago and they have a load of stuffed elephants just as you walk in and to the left. I was actually not able to look at them because they freaked me out so badly. Didn't help that i was surrounded by other things like zebras and lions in glass cases as well so i pretty much had to look at the floor till my sister could lead me to the bit with all the bits and bobs from different civilizations through history (this, thankfully, contained no stuffed anything) :(

Its an irrational fear so yes it is..i'd imagine

I know someone who has a huge fear of cotton wool. We told him that the filters in cigarettes where made of cotton wool while he was smoking and he got sick everywhere outside the pub.

And as a house party years ago a someone sellotaped cottons balls to his hands when he feel asleep. It was brilliant!

What I want to know is, is this a real phobia, or as I suspect of the majority, some pansy dislike that has to have a special name.

I can't stand touching white flour, it makes me cringe just thinking about it and I have to leave the room when someones handling it. But this isn't a phobia.

I think you might have a phobia...
Phobia: An unreasonable sort of fear that can cause avoidance and panic.

If you don't have a phobia of flour, go and get floured up. Right now. Face and hands.

    Pics or it never happened.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Why do you have to leave the room though, if you just don't like it? Go on... touch the flour.
