Oh, I like the chunky style. The current overly detailed style GW paints their stuff in isn't really my favourite really, much prefer stuff like this.

I've been starting my Chaos Mordheim warband, picked up some of the classic metal minis recently:

A Carnifex. Bit of a rush job over the weekend but I think the effect works ok.

Nice! Like how vibrant they are.

Can anyone offer me any advice on painting white? It's a right ballache. I've tried lots of thin coats, but it still looks really uneven.

Id love to collect 40K stuff but i have nowhere near the budget, was having a look around on the net about the vassal 40K plugin you could get but seems after GW slammed them its a bit harder to find up to date infor about it. shame.

@onestepfromlost I googled "vassal 40K plugin" and the first link took me straight to it.

40k Lexicanum - Vasal 40k there's a link to v5.4E there at the bottom of the page.

    v5.4F from Vassal 40k home

Blood Of Kittens' Vassal 40k guide

The author has a new job which leaves little time to work on it and the rest of the team are busy too.

    @RabidChild

    Ta

Re white, an even light grey basecoat first cuts down the number of thin white coats required to single figures at least :)

This about the best white I can manage (pimps stuff again), none of that clever blending stuff but a pretty good even finish. I tried a Tyranid Termagant recently, with gradually highlighted white skeleton. It didn't end well for him.

Right, that's it! I'm definitely going to get the camera out this weekend and get some pics up.

I've got so many models nearly finished on my paint station at the moment, even I'm getting annoyed with myself now. Stupid magpie brain...

Spent the last two evenings not even managing to finish one banner because I keep getting the urge to start something else.

Got my Death Company and Lemartes finished finally though, so I'll get those up.

    Ahem.

I've gone all WWII. Can't do faces at this scale (15mm) but that wasn't surpising as I cant do them at 28mm either. Nonetheless, I present a British Sherman Firefly and German Rifle/MG Squad from Flames of War, The tank is 6cm long, the infantry about 2cm high with the base.

I know it's not GW, whatevs.

I'm trying to be clever and blend it, but it's not working. Doesn't help that i'm painting a Heldrake, so there are millions of little panels to do. Soooo sick of it.

Also, thanks for the advice. Your marines look good, actually - maybe I shouldn't worry about fancy blending and that?

Hmm, can you not edit a post that is a reply?

@4gate those look brilliant. What's FoW like? Been contemplating having a go but it looks pretty complex.

Clearly I didn't take any pictures this weekend. It's because I'm lazy with zero follow-through.

On here, they probably have to change a flywheel or something. White Heldrake, brave, can't wait to see it :)

Stickman, I don't know yet, I was casting around for ages for a GW alternative - looked mainly at Flames of War and

    Infinity - 28mm sci-fi squad level
Hordes of War/Warmachine - hard to describe have a look
    Bolt Action - 28mm WWII

Settled on FOW as 15mm is closer to the size I was after, having loved Epic. Bought the rulebook and Open Fire starter box set. I think it's very cool, get's some grief from some quarters for over simplicity / Hollywood rules, but I'm not after an uber-realistic rule set as such, just some cool minis. Open Fire is 41 on Amazon, full rulebooks, 2 armies, loads of other stuff, you don't need the separate rulebook atall but I got it anyway, I like rulebooks.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flames-FWBX03-Open-Fire-Starter/dp/B009L7QZS4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362423643&sr=8-1

I also got a softback campaign book, 'Nuts', about Bastogne unsurprisingly, you can do Easy Company :) There are loads of model manufactuers, no-one has worked out how to copyright WWII yet.

Cheers. I was looking at the Warmachine/Hordes stuff the other day as it happens, (Privateer make a couple of colours that you can't really get without mixing other ranges), and some of those models are fantastic looking. Might have to have a bash at a couple.

Got five Sanguinary guard finished today for the Blood Angels. Not very happy with them though; I under coated them years ago when I was experimenting with gesso, trying to find an undercoat I liked. If you're a gamer, that stuff is like granite so your models will never chip, but the surface is just bollocks for painting on.

If you're looking for alternative painting projects then the Dust Tactics/Warfare stuff is really nice. Had an intro game of it tonight as was very impressed with the minis. Gotta love zombie-mecha-Nazis.

Some stormvermin I'm working on for my brother. Theme is Nazi rats. I'm doing white for the cloth and it's normally a pain. but I've done a series of fine crossed lines in progressively brighter shades over a base of Astronomicon grey and nuln oil wash. Works quite well for coarse thread. Otherwise, white is a bugger :)
I've found the new GW white to be a lot better than their previous one.

Oh, if anyone wants some Chaos Demons now the need codex is out, I've just put a load on ebay.

They're mostly all old metal ones (not that that's a bad thing), and bits need glueing back on and none are painted to any degree.

That said, the reserve is 150 and there's over 325 of stuff there.

It's called 'Daemons of Chaos collection'. Just a little heads up.

Well, after two months and the odd afternoon, and I'm almost there.
    2
    3
Fifteen scouts to polish off, and they're done. Phew.

Unfortunately, I ended up on eBay (damn you Stick), and managed to get sucked into buying a Khorne Bezerkers boxset, along with the Dread-thing and Chosen from DV for 25 all in. Can't complain.

Surprised at some of the prices stuff goes for though ! Thought it'd be far cheaper than I found, so I think the spare Space Wolves and non-Khorne stuff might be worth sticking up at some point. As for the Eldar, they'll wait for now - need a break from painting white......

    Erm.....

Got a bit carried away on eBay.

Somewhere in the region of 200 of Khornate/Chaos goodness is now headed my way.

Definitely selling all the ol' bric-a-brac and Eldar, partially in response, partially because I'd rather a complimentary foe for the White Scars (despite the fact I'll probably never play again), and to avoid white. :)

It's just as well I can afford it nowadays. Just. See what happens when there's nothing on the games schedule for a while !

Some fantastic painting in those links. I tried a few times on my brothers space wolves about err 17 years ago but was too fiddly for me.

Nah. Handy for the Dread/LRDG fluff I'd considered for them, but after a few shoulder markings and touch-ups for the scouts, they're don........

.......shitsticks. I ordered a bloody LS Storm didn't I ? Nice to see pics though.
