Today I learned that if I respring/refresh my phone it turns my alarms off. I found this out at 6:53am. My alarm is supposed to start going off at 5:50am.

In an impressive military-esque effort, I was up and out within 12 minutes. Not the greatest of starts to the morning.

I have reset my iPhone alarm 3 times, and turned off auto updates, and it still goes off an hour later than it's set.

That's odd. I thought the bug only happened on reoccuring alarms already set. Weird.

Google Maps Error Leads to Nicaraguan Invasion of Costa Rica

A border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica was off by 3,000 meters on Google Maps. This sparked Nicaraguan military commander Eden Pastora to invade Costa Rica and order troops to take down Costa Rican flags in a disputed territory. A Google spokesperson said the source of the error was unknown, but two entire countries have felt its effects.

I thought this was an Onion article when I first saw the headline on reddit!

TIL that Danish numbers are really weird and are the 16th most complicated in the world.

    For example:

76 is seksoghalvfjerds, which is "6 and (3 times 20)". Even more confusingly, the 3 part is actually said "half fourth" (2 would be "half third", 1 would be "half second" etc.).

Not so much something I learned, but very interesting nonetheless, and completely validates the view of the world as being made up of the blind leading the blind. Everyone essentially makes shit up as they go along, and we build on that from generation to generation. (That's oversimplifying it a tad obviously, but you get the point.)

    ( Contains a poem by Donald Rumsfeld... :/ )

Today I learned that in the past 20 years there have been two British children abducted while on holiday, whereas around 300 have drowned, mostly in swimming pools.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I reckon that's because British kids are quite fat i.e. not sexy and more likely to sink.

Yep. Ben Needham was taken from Kos in Greece, 1991.

I learned recently that Londoners sleeping in the underground during the blitz was actually an act of civil disobedience - the government had forbidden it and the population who hadn't fled the city just went 'fuck you' and headed down there anyway because the official shelters were shit.

Given that an awful lot of London's tramps are ex-servicemen, you know, the 'heroes' people are all over while they're still in service and the 'beggars who secretly own Ferrari's' when they fall out of the system - I'm fine with that =)

    ME2 > L4D

If only because it has more than 4 missions.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Shouldn't ban him for saying a shit game is shit though.

Thats not why they banned him. He got banned for going in to every thread and trying to turn it in to a PS3 vs 360 thing.

And your views on ME2 are incorrect. Like your views on most things.

Technically, as their are only opinions, they can't be wrong.
But what is wrong is trying to present opinion as fact.

Today I learned about trap streets: fictional streets (or other landmarks) that are inserted into maps to catch out people who copy their maps rather than doing their own work.

Today I learned about the relative distances to various satellites, up to and including the moon. I had a reasonable idea of the distances involved, but had never seen it all laid out on one image before.

I also didn't know that GPS satellites operate at half-geosynchronous orbits.

That 40 - 76% of police interviews end in a confession, a confession means convictions. 5% of confessions are false, ie. the suspect takes the wrap for someone else or is coerced into giving a false conf. to escape the pressure of an interrogation or alarmingly, the police make the suspect (falsely) belief they committed the crime - dependent on the suspects susceptibility/vulnerability (Gudjonsson, 2003; Howitt, 2009).
