You can make your own crisps in the microwave too.

Heh, after years of telling myself that I will never survive in my career choice without drastically improving my grammar and buying and reading a ton of "Improve Your English" type books it turns out I actually know quite a bit. The amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes I pick up from the directors, solicitors et al. on a day to day basis is shocking. Still got a lot to learn of course but it is a nice feeling knowing that some of these books have apparently sunk in.

Spray a large plate with cooking spray
Slice up a potato nice and thin (the thinner, the crispier they get and less time to cook, obviously)
Chuck them in a freezerbag and pour oil in, give them a good shake
Lay them out on the plate
Microwave on high for 3-6 minutes (when they start to turn brown, they're about done)
Salt, flavour, whatever you want with them, whilst they're still hot and oily
Leave to cool (or eat immediately if you prefer)

have you painstakingly explained to your good lady wife that crisps, chips and fries are the separate entities which we all know them to be here in the civilised part of the English speaking world?

    Yep.

It's weird though, the British 'chip' does actually exist over here and is actually called a 'chip' - a lot of restaurants will have 'fish and chips' as an option.

How the fuck does that work? I LOVE fried onions so you must tell me.
Chop up the onions, put them in a bowl with a nob of butter and micro for a few mins.

    Vile.

When I worked at a Safeways coffee shop, we used to microwave fried eggs. And bacon. Hideous.
  • Deleted user 17 February 2012 19:13:55
Microwaving bacon should be punishable by death.

I had to buy my granny (when she was alive) a microwave to do her bacon in (as it was one of the few things she would eat as she got older) because she kept on setting the fire alarms off in her sheltered housing place when she tried to fry it and the Fire Brigade would automatically be alerted.

She didn't have a clue how to use it and bacon cooked in it was terrible compared to grilled or fried. All in all, it was terribly misjudged.

Poached eggs work quite well in the microwave.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

I do scrambled eggs in the microwave.

That and porridge are about the only things I use it for.

And beans. The wife was adamant they taste better heated in a pan. Soon put that little bastard to bed with a blind test.

Beans do taste better from a pan!

Oh dear, now I'll need to have double beans tonight to make sure.

I haven't actually owned a microwave for years. Never missed it tbh, never really used it.

Insanity. Bean jug is what you need, easier to clean up. Pans don't go in the dishwasher apparently.

Today I re-learned that inside the Kid A CD case, between the back plastic and the bit that holds the CD, is a little nonsensicle booklet of joy.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Vegetables in the microwave are really good. Whack them in a microwaveable tub (like the kind from the chinese) with some butter, herbs and spices of your choice and a bit of water if they're not frozen, then cook for a minute or two. Way better than boiling or steaming and much quicker/easier too.

Today I learned that the Glyphs leading into commercial breaks in each Fringe episode actually mean something:

    http://fringepedia.net/wiki/Glyphs_code

How cool is that? Been watching it since long time ago and this never ever crossed my mind.

Yeah, I've often thought that they must be code, but could never be arsed working them out. Cool though.

    Beautiful tender beings.

I have just learned that pressing ctrl+alt+ an arrow key rotates the screen display in that direction.

This will end badly for my IT-illiterate colleagues. There may even be tears.

Sadly, that's not a universal shortcut, it depends on the graphic card driver.
