I'm not sure why this has popped into my head, but my brothers and I had a bit of a mini-obsession with a budget game called Deviants from Players Software (a pretty good budget publisher of the time) some time around 1988. Kinda reminds me of Metroid nowadays, but I'd never even heard of Metroid back then.

Unfortunately the only video I can find is a "Let's Play" one.

That looks good - what year was that released? Kinda Nodes / Starquake / Dan Dare style hybrid.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that

I was playing it around 88 or 89, but WOS says it came out in 1987 so 1987 it is. I remember feeling like there was so much to explore I'd never see it all. Definitely one of the better straight-to-budget releases that the Spectrum had, imo.

Edit: Just found the Sinclair User review where they make reference to Dan Dare as well.

You should also check out Denizen from the same developers. Kind of like Alien Breed for the Speccy.

You know when someone reminds you of a game you used to own and really like but had completely forgotten the existence of? Thanks! :-)

    Bugaboo the flea's my name!
Never call me jack or jane!

Everybody should just calm down a little bit and have a nice cup of tea.

Just released last weekend is Antiquity Jones, a colourful and rather playable platformer. Give it a whirl, it's cool. :)

So, I had too much time on my hands last weekend so I decided to write a logo drawing effect in assembler but got stuck in writing a y offset lookup table for the stupid screen byte order.

...only to find a fiendlishly clever routine that shifted and masked bits to achieve the same result. People ARE smart on these things aren't they?

30 years young today, and still as awesome as it ever was. I shall be walking down to Starbucks at lunchtime and having a cake in honour of my oldest computer chum. :)

    /wipes a tear

Cool Google front page today, too!

One new game so far today, I suspect there may well be more before the day's out.

I love the last line of that article I posted:

"Sir Clive declined to take part in the conversation"

    Such a miserable sod!

I keep my laptop in it! A pair of trunks and a towel would fit too.

I considered that bag myself when I was looking for a new one a couple of months back. It was too small to be of use for me though.

And Sir Clive still sounds bitter about the Speccy being his only real success and not for the reasons he wanted it to be :)

    Happy birthday ZX Spectrum!

Hail isometric adventure, wireframe vector games, text adventures and flick-screen platformers.

The Register has just put up a rather special-looking retrospective. Some great pictures in there, loving the original design sketches and prototypes!

Am quite tempted to have a wander by the series of talks on the Spectrum at the BFI over the bank holiday weekend - free entry and no booking so presumably you can just turn up for whatever one takes your fancy.

30 years, eh? Where has the time went to? It seems like yesterday I was buying The Fourth Protocol while on holiday in Scotland and wishing the holiday was over so I could start playing it.
  • Deleted user 23 April 2012 12:11:28
always wondered why they looked so old when I first played one around 87'

I remember buying a copy of 'Your Sinclair' magazine when staying at my Gran's place in Scotland. I couldn't WAIT to try out the cover tape when I got home - only to discover that the bloody thing wouldn't work.

Fellow EG-ers have later confirmed that Southern Bell/Evening Star was shit - which helped to heal the wounds.

Jonathan Cauldwell's long-awaited scrolly shooter "More Tea, Vicar?" released today on tape from Cronosoft or free download from here.

Not played the game yet, but the Yerzmyey theme tune is stonking! Who said the Speccy was rubbish at music, eh? Eh?
  • Deleted user 23 April 2012 16:01:10
Dear me, that guy can deliver some amazing tunes!
