otto, a mate at work bought one yesterday and I messed around with it. We sit high up above a road where people speed a lot and I tried to shoot cars at a specific spot on that road to verify the shutter lag.

Much to my surprise, there was none. I shot through the optical viewfinder in RAW and he had the camera on Quiet mode - which is really bloody quiet btw. Loved the build quality and general feeling while holding it. I didn't like the menus nor that circle&cross button to the right you find on flimsy compacts.

Is it possible you've got a broken camera? You should at least take it back and compare it with another one at the shop.

Awfully quiet here, otto are you in X100 shock for not being able to sell it? ;) Tried it some more yesterday, it feels like a very solid solution to be honest. He was kind to send over a few RAW shots and I love them.

Almost that I'd consider picking one up (yours?) but I'm considering a Nikkor pro lens instead for just under the price of a new X100...

Must admit valli, I was also starting to wonder if otto had a duff unit. The camera does have a boatload of issues but the lag seems odd to me.

monkman, the 24-70/2.8. At 1600€ they are simply too expensive new but at around 1000-1100, it's another story.

Nice valli, you on FX then? I came into some inheritance recently and in a moment of madness treated myself to a 70-200 VR2... It's stunning (but huge, feel very conspicuous out and about with it)
  • Deleted user 30 June 2011 08:33:18
Nice one, that's another lens I simply can't motivate owning unless making a living with it. The D7000's resolution (DX that is) has spoiled me and I really want sharp lenses. Because of that I've been looking at the Tamron 70-200 but I don't think I can deal with a slow AF.

I want a quick portrait/all around lens for the kids, thus 24-70 on a DX body is ideal. I'll miss the wide angle end but not that much and the cheap 18-55 will have to do.

otto: good luck with the sale! The work mate had installed the FW upgrade right away so I had nothing to compare it to, but as you say, the upgrade is irrelevant to shutter lag anyway.

    Am jealous.

Where are you getting the lens at that price? Is it pre-owned?
  • Deleted user 30 June 2011 08:34:33
Of course, bought in 2009 and spent entire 2010 in its box. He seems like a serious guy who takes care of his equipment. Will arrange details today hopefully!

Yeah, I also treated myself to a D7000 (sold my D90 - at least I managed to dissuade myself from picking up a D700!) - amazing sharpness and flexibility at high ISO with the RAWs, love it. Though you've got to be more careful to get the focus bang on at f2.8 than the D90 with those extra pixels.

The 24-70 should be great - would be keen myself but I've got a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS which is actually really good. The 24-70's quite a beast too with the hood on, prepare to feel conspicuous in public :-)

Yep, and any pro 70-200 lens on your cam will transform you into a perv! Again, I'm not worried about that as my main focus for this lens are the kids.

If I wanted to be invisible in public I'd rather buy an X100 or even better a Sony NEX!

I sincerely hope 'the kids' means 'my kids' :-D

X100 now sold to a nice Italian pro photographer, think we can both be pleased with the deal & I have learned a little lesson which I'll probably ignore!

So, people on here have the X100 yeah? What's the general consensus? You seem to be able to get them for about £600 or so these days which feels pretty reasonable.

I'm seriously considering selling some stuff and picking one up. Only thing stopping me is the talk of shutter lag in here and internet chatter about "sticky aperture blades". Any horror stories?

The current ones are fixed for SAB although I paid a little extra in John Lewis for a 3 year warranty anyway. It was £679 in there the other day, warranty was £47 think. Just make sure you install latest firmware and you're away. AF much faster, I've never noticed any lag. I'd never buy a used one though. Image quality makes most other cameras look ridiculous, especially M4/3.

@kalel How much was it if I may ask? I see it would be much cheaper for me to buy one from teh UK than get one in sweden. I'm sooooo tempted to get one.

Hey Nth, is it really that big a difference over an m4/3?

    I paid £650.

I had a fair bit of difficulty finding one in the end and the rumour is that the X200 is imminent, and stocks of the X100 are running out. Whether that makes you want to rush and get an X100 or wait for the X200 I don't know. For me it was the former as the pricepoint of the X200 will no doubt be over a grand.

    @valli

Sorry, havn't looked on the previous pages - i persume you have a d7000 still? there are load of great prime lenses for the nikon , especially in the wider bracket, they are really quick and sharp. You can pick them up for 200-350 apeice on amazon.

I currently have a 1.4 50mm on my D700 and its so good, looking at getting the 24 or, 35mm prime lenses

@joelstinton A mate has the 35mm AF, it's not the best. I have a 24mm AF (without D) which is really good and would make more sense to use on your D700.

My favourite wide angle is a CZ Distagon 25mm/2.8, absolutely brutal when closed down to 5.6.
