Just being rational about this for a moment...

Dark Souls is a wonderful, wonderful game and I'd rank it as one of the best ever made. But the news over the last couple of days has been about a remaster - and likely an expensive one - of a game which remains perfectly playable on two current platforms (PC and, via back compatibility, XB1).

With a third party, albeit a reputable one, doing the remaster rather than From Software, it's highly unlikely we'll get any new or revised content. Under those circumstances, resolution and framerate actually become two of the main selling points and talking about them is hardly unreasonable (particularly given that the original version of the game is hardly technically flawless).

Considering how badly optimised these games are it's not surprising though? Dark Souls 1 in particular was awful for 'queuing' attacks. Hopefully they remedy this for the remaster.

Still the best world out of the 3.

@Rogueywon strangely, the 360 version of DS2 was uncapped. In some very rare areas you could see it go well above 30fps, it even looked like 60fps. I remember it always happened in the cave tunnel leading to No Man's Wharf.

I actually tried hitting the wall a few times in those areas, it didn't seem to affect durability in any way. I'll assume it was a specific bug introduced with the PC version.

So does that mean the Xbox X runs it at 60fps?

Hmmm, that From are not working on this to improve the base game and correct areas that were rushed and bosses that were downright cack then it falls further down my list of interest. I mean, it would be nice to play it at 60fps and enjoy the areas with better textures but definitely not at full price.

I can see the attraction of getting it on the Switch though, not that I have a Switch.

@JiveHound the Xbox and Xbox x run at 60fps. Xbox is 1080 and Xbox x is upscaled to 4k

Oh, I should load it up again at some point then.

That makes the Switch version the easiest one to want. Will it make THE TEN?!

Possibly not but May/June is generally quiet for games so I'll reassess at the time.

@JiveHound oh wait, sorry were you talking about original dark souls?
The x runs it better but I don’t think it does 60

I'm pretty sure DS1 is vsynced on all consoles.

Only DS2 on the 360, for some reason, never got any kind of framerate cap or vsync. The tearing is pretty bad too. People thought From would eventually patch in at least a framerate cap, but that never happened.

Yeah DS1! I didn't think it was 60fps last time I played it.

Think of all the frames you missed! Now you'll see 50% more of your fall, in crisper higher definition too. It'll be like you're falling out of the screen!! ;)

On the plus side, ledges on 60fps will probably be much easier to navigate.

Unless you are quadfather, then you are going to fall anyway.

Just to amend that slightly, I don't actually fall - I get pushed.

I’m playing this the 360 version on the x on a 4k tv and to be honest I thought it would look crap but nope it actually looks bloody decent.

A bit more info on who is doing the remaster on various platforms emerging now.

PC, PS4 and XB1 versions are being handled by QLOC, who have a reasonable track record. They've done the PC ports of Dragon's Dogma, DMC, Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Resident Evil 6 and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, among others. They've also done the current-gen platform version of Dead Rising. The only thing I don't like in their portfolio is that PC version of Tales of Zestiria, but I suspect the PS3/PS4 code-base for that game was horrible to begin with. So overall, we can be optimistic about the PC, PS4 and XB1 versions of this.

What's more worrying is the Switch version. Unnamed Chinese studio.

    Yeah. Fuck.
