Tip for blades. Look directly down as you're approaching them. It enables to you get up close and ignore the perspective that makes you afraid of getting too close

It is a twat, I admit. But soon, you'll wonder why you had all these problems in the first place as you're whizzing through it, one handed, with a glass of beer and a cigarette in your other hand, smoking jacket and all.

I also get killed by the boulders too much.

Or I find the mimic, and want to kill it out of furious vengeance, but it eats me like the disgusting tongue horror that it is.

I just don't play it like you should play DS.

This is an odd aspect of DS. I don't worry too much about putting it on in any state.

The worst that can happen is I die a few times. Usually collecting my death and running home again if I die often enough to be able to level up.

Somehow finding 2-3 hours a day for it.

Havel's a bastard, I want to be able to block at least one hit before dying before I try to master him. By the sounds of it the Taurus demon will be demanding but doable.

Better weapons probably wouldn't hurt,.. Currently level 27.

Wow, that was easy... Couple of plunges and a swipe and it's dead.

Now onwards to find the next bonfire.

Still gleaning much enjoyment from reading newbies play-throughs, the lack of sense of challenge these days is somewhat irksome. I wish I could have bottled that "first time through" feeling of elation.

In all honesty, when you're learning to beat him it's best to do it naked and don't try to block. At low levels he'll likely 1-shot you anyway if he connects so you may as well try and give yourself the mobility advantage.

Was about to say that. Just stay locked on and circle all the time. Helps with backstabs too. Pointless blocking until you're nails

Havel naked, no shield parry/riposte-only challenge. No leveling, no upgrading weapons?

edit: bugger, he doesn't riposte does he? Parry only, no backstab challenge then :)

They key to Havel is too roll much later than you want to. Roll too early and he'll change direction mid-swing.

The key to Havel is stand outside the door from the forest entrance and lob bombs at him and swing at him when he lunges at you and then retreats swiftly. Takes 5 minutes but it's easy!

The real key to havel is to go in naked and parry his fat arse.

I almost - ALMOST - wish there was a hardcore mode for DS.

I've only gone through two controllers on it already. Not meeting that quota.

    Keep up man!
I got the NPC in sens, I opened up the shortcut, I got the silent ring and the more items ring, I already had the firekeeper soul from Blighttown with Estus Flask at +2, I got the Rusty Ring and Havel's Ring and went to the secret place and collected loads of loot and getting killed at the bottom by Papa Mushroom Man, I tried again and got cursed so now I'm back at Undead Asylum to remove the curse and head to Anor Londo again.

Can't wait for the next reply when you get to the next area :)

So I'm starting again, with a Strength build. I know they're supposed to be tough, but after being a ninja I want to tank it up with a giant hammer or club of some kind.

I got the Zweihander, so should I focus foremost on getting STR up enough to be able to use it? Or maybe some END would be useful also.

Dan did a similar build a while ago. I think he used the giant club from blighttown in the end.

Can't remember requirements off the top of my head.

I suppose its a case if vit, end and str. That's how I'd do it, but I guess some people may skip on the vit for a while

LB will be along in a minute, he's our resident Zweihander aficionado/obsessive...:) (spoiler - get more strength to wield that bad boy and get swinging!)

Zwei scales D with both STR and DEX, and so is a nicely balanced although most people put it in a strength build as they've already started down that path by getting the 24 STR needed to wield it. But the good thing about any weapon that scales on more than one path is that even to the late game you can get a useful damage increase by pumping levels into the relevant stat while avoiding the useful ceiling. If Zwei scaled only with STR, hitting people at 80 STR and 0 DEX will give you far less than hitting people at 40 STR and 40 DEX due to the rapid fall off of additional damage after 40.

As to what you intend with the stats, depends on what you're going to do with the sword itself. If you intend to go elemental then there's little point in going above 24 STR and you should concentrate on END.

My best build (and the only one I've beaten the game with) was 40 STR and 40 END and a Zwei +15. Not strictly the most efficient damage dealer but I wub my Zwei, and if you want to cause pure damage you should be going for a dex build anyway. Strength has other advantages, like using weapons which stagger / knock down enemies.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

And I never put a point into VIT. 40 END plus Havel's armour plus Havel's ring plus a decent shield (Black Knight) seemed the more efficient option. Course I'm royaly fucked in NG+...
