No, don't miss it. In fact, explore every inch, take your time. As Ela said, excellent loot there.

Random, but heartfelt post folks- if you've a PS3 and haven't yet played Journey, it's just a stunning game.
I mention it because it feels like a kindred spirit to Dark Souls, very pared back and enigmatic and with a really great take on multiplayer.
Genuinely still moved by the story and the ending, even as an atheist, I can understand why some go so far as to say it's a near religious experience, amazing!

    Question time again ;)
If I recall correctly, someone mentioned a while ago that Queelaag's fury sword would be a good weapon to use against Ornstein. Well, I have a +5 one and I find the results a bit underwhelming. Did a NG+ attempt at O&S yesterday, together with Solaire. Smough was absolutely no problem with my +14 lighting Uchigatana :). Ornstein however (I want his soul, already have Smough's), with Queelaag's sword I only seem to chip off 100hp or so each hit. Still, I got to about 1/4 of his hp before I messed up :)

So, is Queelaag's sword really the best option for a DEX/STA/STR build against Ornstein? My normal go-to weapon is my +15 balder sword.

I think they're both weak to fire if you have an upgraded pyro glove... one more option.

Balder's sword thriumphs above most if you need a weapon against ornstein.

Hmmm...I was expecting fire to deal the same order of damage to Ornstein as the lighting uchi did to Smough (i.e. a lot ;)). Not sure whether I'd dare go up against Ornstein with a pyro glove, maybe if I feel exceptionally confident (cocky). Otherwise it'll be uchi and balder :)

I'd go from the depths to be honest - the back door route is generally to whizz through the place quickly, but if it's your first time, I'd concentrate on the items at the start and at the middle of the area and then explore a bit more comfortably once you hit the first bonfire

Items to take - Spider shield from the depths (v.good shield generally), any +poison resistant armour - just wear the highest you've got, and your most powerful weapon at the ready. Rusted iron ring to let you run and walk at the normal speed once you hit the swamp at the bottom. And as people have said, a few blooming moss clumps if you get toxicated and standard purple clumps to sort the poison out.

Shield up pretty much everywhere until you take out the non-respawning toxic dart throwers

And welcome, fellow 40+ gamer :-)

Add one to that list - turned 40 this August :) This can't be a coincidence...

@lotos8ter - I can still beat my kids (5 & 8) at pretty much anything, but that'll most likely be a matter of time.

At least Dark Souls is helping me "keep in shape" ;)

If you enjoy getting killed over and over, losing your progress often, getting your world invaded by kiddies with ADHD, falling off ledges, getting ambushed by ruthless monsters, getting stomped by bosses. This game kills you. Then kills you again. And then laughs.

If you are happy with all of that, pull up a seat and make yourself at home :)

Bloody hell, we should setup a +40 dark souls group. You old cunts :) 41 in march!

Maybe It's the link between those old 8 bit nails games that's drawn us all together.

We should setup a dark souls pub meet! Where's everyone from? Cheshire here

I don't know, is Dark Souls any harder than completing Knight Lore, or Jet Set Willy?
Maybe not, not least because of those fucking rubber keys!

I was 40 in September, live in Cheltenham now, grew up in the West Mids funnily enough. It's like it was fated or something ;)

likewise, delighted to be wreaking havoc and misery amongst the youths with (currently) a fierce STR/FAI/DEX build. Bastards, they are.

Wow! - I must share this with someone: I have just beaten O&S on NG+! :D Smough first, then Ornstein with only the help of Solaire (which means he was only useful as a diversion for Ornstein for the 1st part) Uchi for Smough, Balder for Ornstein did the trick. Awesome feeling! Feeling awesome! ;)
Heartrate is only now getting back to normal...

Well, well; seeing as I started the whole 40 something sub thread, I declare I am 42 years old and from God's own county of Yorkshire of course. Director's Bitter? How dare you! Timothy Taylor's is (easily) the best beer in the world. Thanks. Bye
