    Think the undead merchant sells the heater shield which is 100% block and pretty stable for a light/fast parry item

    What's the best alternative to the eagle shield guys? Taking damage while blocking has made it a bit crap :(

    I'm back in the swing of things already, 2 hours in and I'm about to take on the gargoyles!
    Black Knight Shield appears to be the next best thing. Though I'm sure someone will correct me!
    Problem is, you're probably not going to get one before the very end of the game. You can get a Silver Knight's shield in Anor Londo, and it's basically just as good and a bit lighter to boot.

    Still on my 1st playthrough (so no expert here :)), but so far I've been sticking to the Knight Shield that I found in Undead Parish. 100% physical and upgradable with 'regular' Titanite. Stability is a bit lower than the shields mentioned before, but now that I have it at +9 it's pretty good. I have thought about switching, but I seem to keep coming back to this one (I do have the Eagle shield upgraded to ~+10 as well for dealing with lightning attacks, but the 95% physical means I switch back to the Knight Shield for everything else)

    Really getting into daggers with the two new tracer weapons. I feel like a weirdo!
    With 38 dex, the Dark Silver Tracer was delivering nearly a 1000 riposte damage. Could not get it to inflict toxic damage on npc's, but still love the R2 animation- feels like you're shanking someone in prison ;)

    Did some DLC PVP last night, despite the long wait times, it was really good. Actually managed a three win streak although, I wont mention how many deaths that took. Still not great at fishing for back stabs, have to eek wins out by attrition. Most people just sprint in at the start too, no honour. A great way to learn though, iron forges iron and all that bollocks.

    One guy just turtled up constantly with an eagle shield and lightning spear and, with a few seconds between deaths before I dropped in again, I couldn't think of the best way to counter...

    Any ideas?

    I think you've just given a great example of why my beloved eagle shield was nerfed ;)

    If memory serves, the bane of my heavy build was any kind of fast magic/pyro/faith. The one thief invader I came across would use something at range to make me dodge then circle round for backstab. I may take a bit to pull off but you only need a couple of hits.

    For the emperor!

    Cheers dude, that makes sense. Little bit limited with faith offense- I bet Great Chaos Fireball would have worked great.

    @mcmothercruncher

    Do you have a spear? A very long one, such as Silver Knight or Pike is best - patch 1.06 makes people hiding behind shields eat up more stamina when they attack and defend. So just two hand your own spear and attack from distance while they hide behind the Eagle shield, and they will go into stun animation quickly, giving you a chance to get an extra hit in.

    Also, if they spam attacks from behind a shield, you can walk up to them, block their first attack then immediately parry. With a bit of luck, you should catch them and get a riposte for massive damage with that silver tracer.

    @mcmothercruncher - shotels are good for turtling enemies - a fair proportion of the damage goes through the shield (you'll know the feeling if you've ever attacked Lautrec) and normally puts a stop to endless blocking.
    The shotel is off a ramp to the side of Sens not far from the start. Its where you meet Onion Dude moaning about his balls

    Shotel. The heavy attack goes through shields. I use it as a backup weapon, so if I get a turtle guy, or someone starts blocking on low health, I can rip right through their defence.

    Yeah, it's not bad for a lowly armour from a noob merchant ;)
    Especially, say, the chest piece, with a helm, gloves and then the skirt. With Havels Ring Quad, you might still be under 25% weight.
    That's definitely worth a shot. I love pissing about with armour - especially one I haven't tried before. I'll see if I can mix and match with the steel set for shits and giggles. Need to get endurance up more.

    Though really getting there now with this bb char - vit 30, end 29, dex 20 something, and 20 int for some spells. (Which I keep forgetting to buy). Rescued the npc's, and got all armour (tattered and maiden all to +9), using balder 15 with either pine resin or magic weapon. Black shield +5, pharis +15. And used 30 humanity to open up the shortcut too. Twatted quelaag, so it's sens now. Love the progress rate on bb chars :) Might as well enjoy it while I can

    Thanks for the shield advice guys! I had a quick look and I actually have more equipment from my first playthough than I though. I've definitely got a black knight shield, three in fact. I'm guessing they drop in the kiln as I had to do that section about twenty times before I beat the game.

    No, I meant at the beginning of the DLC - the sanctuary garden, where the first bonfire is.

    Thanks folks for the ideas, I'll upgrade a long spear and a shotel to keep handy for PVP.

    I am a bit sad though that I took Faith all the way up to 50 to be a God bothering powerhouse and now both my Divine Iato +10 and Occult Uchi +5 are both easily out performed by any old dex based +14 weapon. Hey ho.

    Isn't it superb how you can never quite feel you've nailed every aspect of a Souls game? What other franchise offers endless offensive and defensive decisions and tactics. Awesomesauce.

    Ah, but on the plus side, you can now get an Uchi or similar to +15, and then use Darkmoon Blade on it which scales with your Faith (I believe?) for super mega damage!

    Yup, you can with various levels of meganess -

    Blade of the Darkmoon -> Talismans MagAdjust * 1.8
    Blade of the Darkmoon +1 -> Talismans MagAdjust * 1.9
    Blade of the Darkmoon +2 -> Talismans MagAdjust * 2.0
    Blade of the Darkmoon +3 -> Talismans MagAdjust * 2.1

    Sunlight Blade is worth grabbing if you can't be bothered with doing the Darkmoon stuff. Not quite as powerful, but still a really nice boost from your faith.

    Those archers in Anor Londo are real bastards aren't they? Jeez!

    Btw, apparently I can enter that painting. Should I do it before continuing or leave it be for now? (I'm currently SL65)

    @Red_Bool

    I'd say have a blast through the Painted World (although you should be aware that once you enter it you have to play the whole way through it to get out again. The enemies aren't too bad but can deal tasty damage. T'was probably my fave part of the game! ::D

    Regarding the bastard archers, if you don't have a decent bow, two hand your sturdiest shield, take out the guy on the left first by twatting him with the shield, repeat for the other bugger. It can be pretty frustrating but is a decent NG tactic!

    Apparently, you can farm the souvenirs of reprisal from the crow demon's in the painted world. Might make it less of a chore, depending on the drop rate

    Aye, took me about half an hour or so to get 7 or 8 out of the lanky bastards (1.05). Was pretty handy actually, scored a decent amount of souls out of the runs too.

    @FuzzyDuck - Cheers mate! I'll have a stroll through the painted world tonight then before getting back to business on those archers :)

    I have the Pharis bow (upgraded to +4 I believe), which I use for luring out enemies and taking cheap shots, but I can't find a proper spot where I can get a clear shot at them and they can't hit me (what I loving call "Skyrim tactics" ;)) Their arrows pack quite a punch!

    @Red_Bool

    No worries! :D

    Come to think of it, the only way o was able to hit them with a bow was with the Dragonslayer Bow (was NG++ by this stage), which you get pretty soon after those two lads! That's actually the bow they're using, you need decent stats to use but it's a beast.

    I go down to the (last two) lightning gargoyles, kill them, and then leg it up to the next block while being shot at. I then have to time and nudge my way slightly out to the right and hit the guy with a couple of poison arrows before he can return fire. Then it's the waiting game. Cheap, I know, but the guy on the left then becomes a doddle. :)
