    Boss at work has his... seems as though the screen is nowhere near as impressive as his old 800, but not sure if this is a dodgy model :{

Think I prefer the 800 in terms of form factor.

Just got home with it and yes the 800 feels sleeker overall but I just love the larger screen. The sweet spot would have been a 4" device but I guess 4.3" was better suited to the US market.

By the way, the UK Lumia 900 comes with Tango onboard complete with tethering :)

Bye-bye Lumia 800 ... fun whilst it lasted however, I got so fed-up looking at your Marketplace and seeing how many million-billion miles better the App store (and even the Google Play store) is.

Yes, it is simple, clean and pleasant to look at - I'd go as far to say that I prefer the 'live tiles' to both Anroid and iOS - but sometimes that's not always good enough when the selection of Apps is so poor.

A good friends partner is more than happy to pay 170 for my Lumia 800 after playing/toying about on it last weekend.

... anyone who has a Windows Phone feels the same way?

Yea, I think you're criticisms are valid. Won't be staying on WP7 for too long. Can't even get a decent bloody xbmc remote app on it.

    Please don't laugh ...

... but I love playing social games like 'Draw Something' and 'Words with Friends', two very popular games which are not even on the blooming Marketplace!

Nothing wrong with that imo. I enjoy a bit of words with friends from time to time as well, or I did when I had an Android phone.

I like the lumia, it's a lovely phone and WP7 would be awesome if it had a better/more vibrant marketplace but right now its killing it a bit for me. The media integration is whats keeping me in the game as it's way better than my Desire was.

Your complaints are valid but then again everyone knows that so you should have seen that coming and avoided buying Windows Phone in the first place if you wanted xbmc or Words with Friends.
Then again I have an iPad so I can my missing apps (maybe a handful) on that.

the thing is the xbmc app worked at first but now it doesn't and theres no solution. It's a fairly standard, ubiqutous media center so I'm suprised there isn't a decent app.

Got one of these through work, a Nokia and it's not terrible. However, it's not brilliant either. The marketplace is a bit woeful and a little hard to navigate to it's fullest.

So my question - what apps are the must haves?

That's a hugely open question and dependent on what you're after, to be fair.

Useful practical stuff, good games, things people use often or enjoy having available.

All I've done so far is put skype on there.

With regards to good games, one I'm spending huge amounts of time playing atm (and is totally free) is Wordament.

There's been a huge swathe of price cuts for WP7 XBL games too, so you can pick up some decent bargains.

I wouldn't recommend the Facebook app, it can be a PITA to use (similarly to other formats really). The Flickr app is good if you intend to upload a lot of pictures. Same with youtube for video. Tunein is a nice one for radio.

    +1 for Wordament.

Netflix and Screenrush are pretty good to have as well. Handy Safe is a paid app that I use all the time for storing my passwords.

There are some pretty good games at their new 79p price point, but if that's still too much, Minesweeper, Sudoku, Shuffle Party, Flowerz and Breeze are all free and all worth a look. Bug Village is also free, but shite and relies on in app purchases to progress much past the tutorial.

Last FM is good for tunes and free for WP7 users.

    Good stuff, thanks.

Now I've spent some time with this (lumia 900), I'm really impressed. I've always liked the look of the Metro interface anyway, but I really enjoy using it as well. I don't think it'll convert me in the long term, but it's definitely extremely capable.

I'd suggest SuperTube if you need a youtube app. I haven't tried the other youtube apps in a while, so they may have improved, but that's simply because I'm happy with what SuperTube offers.

For anyone that wants the Nokia 710 it's 99+10 pay as you go at CPW in store.

    Also @mobiles website

You can also get it for 89.99 at CPW as a pre pay upgrade. Basically if you've been using a pay as go sim for 6 months or more and top it up from time to time you qualify for that price.

Hard to beat at that price as an entry phone.

You also get a 20 voucher to spend on apps after 14 days when you go to Nokiafreeapps

Lastly a 6 month Zune music pass(Spotify really) - offer expires to 31 May 2012

Or you could get a Lumia 800 with a free pair of Purity HD headphones, a 40 app voucher and 35 quidco cashback for 15.50 a month. So 372 contract cost less the cash back, the voucher and the headphones = shiny new Lumia 800 for 98 overall. (although I have been generous and allowed full rrp for the headphones even though you can get them for 115 from Amazon, and no doubt in 30 days there will be 100's of them on ebay).

Ok so I've managed to get some paper stuck in the headphone port on my Lumia 800. A bit annoying as I only realised it when I went to put the headphones in and forced it further down inside.

Any recommendations of how to extract the paper without damaging the port?

Can't imagine anything other than a paper clip or small stitching needle. Former first or latter non pointy end at first. Can't be that fancy down there but up to you. Best of luck.

I've been trying the Zune Pass the last few days. I suppose Xbox Music will solve this but your phone, PC, Xbox don't mirror each other, like playlists etc. not being in the cloud or whatever. Streaming music isn't as good as Spotify, not that instant. So far, I've found music that I've searched for but that old problem, hard to think of stuff you would like to listen to when you search. On the Xbox, christ, Gold again. That console is a fucking travesty with the Gold pay wall. Pay twice, nah, fuck off Microsoft.

I love the Zune Pass. Tried the free trial and had no qualms about continuing. Agree about the lack of ability for discovering random stuff though. What I do really like though is using it in conjunction with Bing music search when I'm watching a film a song catches my attention.

If anyone hasn't already downloaded, photosynth is on the marketplace. It's a rather excellent panoramic photo thingy.

Nice. It will be interesting to see what they offer.

I have a HTC Trophy and Nokia 710 running WP7 here at work, and if I weren't so invested in iOS, I would probably switch full-time.

I'm not expecting too much, if there was going to be anything interesting announced, there would be a bit more buzz generated. According to WPCentral, it's mostly going to be a quick look st WP8, the new screen resolutions and a few other bits and bobs.
