Given it two listens, it's definitely a grower, there are no real stand out anthems like Funeral or Neon Bible, but IMO it's a more consistent album, and Month of May is quite awesome.

It's ok... I think it will grow on me. It's maybe 3 songs too long.

It's weirdly lacking in anthemy rabble-rousers like No Cars Go, Rebellion (lies) or Wake Up.

it's more cohesive, perhaps, but i'd agree with the no rabble-rousers comment

love it though and there're some crackers on there

    Currently i'd say Funeral>Neon Bible>The Suburbs.

But I am prepared for The Suburbs to click at any moment.

i think that's a given - only had chance for a couple of play throughs so far - a few more and i think i'll be completely sold

I really like it. Half Light II and Month Of May are awesome. Definitely going to grow on me - it's much poppier, We Used To Wait is also a good 'un. I know some people say it's too long, but I like an album of length and think it's really well structured.

I'll agree with deathgibbon to an extent on Rococo - it's not a great track imo. I'm not a fan of overly repeated chorus'.

It's a technically very nice album, but it hasn't wowed me in the way Funeral, and to a lesser extent, Neon Bible did on first listen.

Seeing as it's not been mentioned on this thread, 3.99 at Amazon if you're on the fence.

I've listened to it a few more times. Some of the songs are growing on me, like Modern Man and City With No Children. However, it's mostly a dirge. Rococo is the worst song I've heard from a major indie band in a long time.

I like a good hour-long album as long as the material is consistently strong. However, this is over-long because most of the material is crap-average.

    6/10 from me.

    Huh, I don't mind Rococo.

I like it a lot, though as already said, it's too long - I've not made it to the end yet.

And almost every song features "The Kids".

Empty Room is a lovely song I think, those strings at the start are sublime.

Half Light II (No Celebration) sounds like Arcade Fire collaborating with some 'hip' electro band, but isn't a bad song at all.

I'm completely in love with this album, it's incredible from start to finish. I've had it on non-stop all day pretty much, keep discovering new favourite bits on each listen. Fantastic stuff, album of the year easy.

So what, this album a winner folks? Loved 'Funeral' but I still haven't listened to 'Neon Bible' yet (too many to get through!).

Judging from the range of responses here I'd say its forum marmite. It's reviewing very well though.

Aye, I'm certainly going to give it a whirl after 'Neon Bible' as it would just feel wrong otherwise.
  • Deleted user 2 August 2010 23:54:34
I'm actually surprised at how well it's reviewing. On another forum I post on, possibly the largest indie music board on the net, it's been absolutely slated.

Brand loyalty from reviewers, I suppose. ;)

Download only, that is. Still the best part of nine quid on CD. Still, that's not to be sniffed at - it's not so long ago that I was paying 14 quid for albums on the high street.

It's still more than I paid for either Funeral or Neon Bible though.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    Oh do behave!

    :)

Love this album - thought Funeral was fantastic, and Neon Bible very good, but this is excellent.

My favourite is Deep Blue - lovely song. Album's a bit of a mixed bag overall for me.
