I've been told by a couple of people that updating to iOS4 pretty much cripples the speed of iPhones, but haven't heard anything about ipod touches. I've got the latest touch and would rather not update if it means a speed / performance hit. Have any of you done it, and if so, what's the verdict?

    Thanks, lovely, smashing, cheers.

I can only speak for me and my 2nd Gen, but overall it's the same as it ever was. No performer loss or gain, though this being online all the time is a bit of a battery killer.

Yeah, I've got the latest touch with 4 on and it's good as gold...

Battery is poo but I hear that's just the way it is and nothing to so with the os.

Pity it's not supported on models earlier than 2008 :(

Don't forget the persistent WiFi with iOS4, good for some people, not for others.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

If you have the latest touch it will be fine. Also be wary of believing what "a couple of people" have told you.

    I updated to iOS4.

2nd Gen, not as responsive, battery life now like an iPhone, will run for a few days tops if not in use.

Before the update everything was much more responsive and the battery life would last weeks if I didn't touch it. I may reset the whole thing and reload from scratch, I have heared varying reports with this so am not in a hurry. I could always rollback (allegedly).

But, it's not too much of a bother for me as I have mountains of patience. I could see that this would annoy some people though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to... er.... have a bit more of a think before I do anything.

As you have the latest version of the iPod Touch I am sure that you will be fine, I have yet to hear a report of iOS4 problems on any of the latest gen of hardware.

But I don't blame you for treading carefully. Good luck!

iPut iOS4 onto my iPhone 3G and it has pretty much crippled it. It hangs for seconds at a time when you ask it to do anything and it has caused the head unit in my car to almost stop recognising it as an iPod.

I would upgrade but i'm unsure which iPod Gen I have... it's 3 months old + according the apple website identification pictures + serial number so it should be a 3rd gen - but, a couple apps tell me I have a 2G model.

For that reason, i'm afraid I can't invest, i'm out.

    This.
My Onkyo dock/amp took ages to read it as an ipod and the hanging just got more and more frustrating. I nearly launched it the other day when it hung whilst I tried to answer a call.

Got an iphone 4 yesterday though and it's so lovely and quick!

iOS4 has the nasty habit of not switching off the touch's wireless connections when it's in suspend mode, so it can be quite draining of the battery, even when not in use. You can switch it to Plane mode, which switches off all wireless communications, but it's a manual step you have to do each time you want to switch everything off.

Performance wise, I have the latest touch, and iOS 4 hasn't effected the speed one bit. It's still as zippy as ever.

Just picked up a new gen 8GB Touch, the screen is absolutely stunningly crisp and clear. Now to download those Cave shooters!

I have an iPod touch, runs all games( though sometimes need to reset it to free the memory(rarely)) Only drawback I have of mine is it's battery life. Maybe has improved though in later editions.

If the camera was better on the new touch, I'd get one.

Yup, it's not great 960x720 the images are pretty poor. But the device is ultra slim though, looks like another 1mm has been shaved off the thickness and width. Everything is very nippy even more so with multitasking.

    I like it.
